How to update via FTP

Joomla versions 2.5, 1.7 and 1.6 are all end-of-life since December 31st 2014 and are no longer supported. Please use Joomla 3.x instead.

How to update via FTP

I cannot upgrade my Joomla 2.5.17 site due apparently to a max exec time. Do I just copy the update files to the root directory?

I should have checked the docs. That is how I thought it could work, just didn't want to brick it. Thanks alot.
