I had the same problem, but it was temporary. It cleared itself in about 15 minutes without any changes. I realize this doesn't help Beluga, but I found it interesting . . . and puzzling! Now if all problems could be self-rectifying . . . :)

I had similar issues with my admin back-end JS not working as it should. FireBug was indicating that "this.overlay.effect" was not a function, and my Options button would open a full-sized screen not in a lightbox.

My solution eventually lead me to the php_errors.log file and to the following location: \content\plugins\system\highlight\

I replaced the existing files with those from another Joomla 2.5.x website that I had in a backup location. The copied files fixed my JS errors perfectly. I have no explanation as to why or how they were corrupted but at least I got them fixed.
