Thank you. It worked now. I asked my host about the fopen, they said it is open by default. I told them about the error message and then they went in and ran a permission script. I asked them what did they change. They said they don't know as it is all in the script but I did not see anything different with my file permission. All my folders are writable before they ran the script and after. lol. I did not have this problem when I upgraded before and I only have problem with 2.5 version upgrade. Still puzzled but glad that I can now use the Extension Manager to upgrade it. Thanks a lot.

THANK YOU THANK YOU, I have to say Leolam - I love you! I just updated a small site and had the verical control panel, probems with formatting my articles and no user manager.
I purged the cache but then did FIX DATABASE and everything seems to be FABULOUS again! The frontend of the site was ok but the backend was NOT GOOD!
I was about to spend hours fixing with backups and reinstalls - and always come to the forum as a first port of call but sometimes bugle along till I realise I should do this first. I did this site for my friend for free and so this was going to be a real chore to fix!
ALL IS DONE!!! THANK THANK YOU AGAIN!

Nice discussion
jupgrade is not a problem for me.but the main issue is when i migrate to 2.5 my template is seems like empty.only i can see the background plus header means i cant see content/left side/main menu..i realy dont know how to set all which show me the same template which it looked in 1.5.
i have no idea that how to change templatedetails.xml positions and index.php..i guess on these 2 files we need to make changes..if any one guide me from here that how i can display my template as it is like in 1.5
any video tutorial or any easy one.suggestions would be highly appreciated

Many Thanks

Hi

I have been having great difficulty upgrading a 1.7.0 site to 2.5.4. I have tried many times and followed the Practical Guide to the letter but I still get the exact same result as described in viewtopic.php?f=625&t=712729. Everything works but as soon as I log out the backend falls over see attached image.
I have refreshed the cache in the extension manager to retrieve all extension details etc and re installed where required. There was no information missing and everything was working. End the session and the backend login is not available and the backend looks as though it has not logged out but all the GUI has gone. If I upload my akeeba backup to a my FTP site can you investigate?

You are affected by this issue: http://joomlacode.org/gf/project/joomla ... m_id=28354

Remove your site's files, restore your backup, go to your site's Global Configuration, remove the Super Admin and Backend Login privileges from the Public group, then upgrade to Joomla! 2.5.4. Done.

This was quite easy. Thanks. In your instructions, the word "upgrade" should state "update". There are two places where you state a button is on the right, when it's actually on the left.

Thank you again!

Thank you for the info.

The problem:, it only produces error 500 (tried on 3 sites, no error logs produced) and when I back out the URL from the 500, I am still at Version 1.7.3.

I found I got a blank screen when trying to update from Joomla 1.7. This was due to the upload_max_filesize in my php configuration was set too low.

Before disabling any extensions one should check this first.

Hello!

I am having similar problems with updating my Joomla! 1.7 installation to the newest available version.

I am told by my webhost, though, that it is because my Joomla! installation is unable to localize the current Joomla! version of my website. That's why it wont update.

Can anyone help me with what to do about this problem?

Thank you!

How much CPU does joomla 2.5 takes?
Because my host InMotion Hosting closed my account because of this.

Thanks Leo for the tutorial.

Unfortunately, I have two issues :-[

a) Fixing the tables doesn't fix all. I keep having that red issue with that:
COM_INSTALLER_MSG_N_DATABASE_ERROR_PANEL

b) In the front end, in my homepage, articles are not displayed in columns, even though in the menu item "home" this is correctly set up (two column, on message on top and so on).

I am returning to 1.7 until I can fix that :( Good I used akeeba for backing up :p

Thanks in advance. :pop

If the update package returns a 302 redirection code, then the file won't be downloaded if open_basedir is set. The file will be created in the tmp folder with 0 bytes, and the updater will error out since it won't be able to unzip the file.

(For example, reading:

http://joomlacode.org/gf/download/frsre ... ackage.zip

returns the following location header:

Location: http://downloads.joomlacode.org/frsrele ... ackage.zip)

I've been reading through this post trying to figure out what happened with my upgrade. I do remember seeing that there was a copy error, but I don't remember if it was on the upgrade or installing a component (I was trying to get a component to work which is why I upgraded in the first place). I'm on godaddy, so I don't think disk space is an issue. I'm not sure what to check on the PHP settings.

I've done all the purging of the cache and discovery. I had two database errors and clicking Fix got rid of one of them, but the other won't go away. The error says:

Database update version (None) does not match CMS version (2.5.6).

Any ideas for me?

I wonder if you could help. I tried the steps on the first page. Got the allow_url_fopen error, so created a PHP.ini file with allow_url_fopen = 1 in it. That allowed the 'find' button to find the upgrade. I stared the upgraded and it failed not long after starting.

Im no in the position that my site (seems to) work, but when I try to log in to administrator I get the error shown below.

Stupidly, I didn't back up, but have access to everything through my ftp programme obvioulsy.

Any advice?

I've heard that too. Is there a way to install it when I cannot access the administration part?

Im a real newbie! So please dont be ticked off!

I tried the upgrade from 1.7.4 to 2.5 and all I get is "Error, Copy Failed, Return to control Panel" I read something about changing permisions so I decided to chaneg all the files and folders in the public_html to 777 then my site became inaccessible so I reversed that action.

I really dont know how to go about this upgrade. Can someone please help with the most simple instructions.

Thanks
