Upgrading Joomla Websites (1.5.25 to latest 2.5x)

Post by Kyuuketsuki » Sat Mar 03, 2012 5:06 pm

Hi,

I have a couple of Joomla 1.5 sites (both with Agora forums) and I want to upgrade them to Joomla 2.5.

I've tried using a utility called jupgrade and it simply didn't work (or at least didn't appear to do anything) ... I've looked at some of the upgrade methods and you seem to have to upgrade to the latest 1.5x, then to 1.6, then to 1.7 and probably then to 2.5. I'm an advanced Windows techy, I've two years experience of Joomla admin (so I can install modules and stuff, just not anywhere near an expert) but every time I look at Joomla upgrade instructions I just get utterly confused.

I honestly don't mind if I upgrade or migrate but is there a relatively painless way of carrying out such upgrades?

I do it the manual way as I find the upgraders don't work very well. This is how I do it. I have completed 3 sites this way so far. It takes a bit more time but it works

Assumed you’re using a Cpanel host account and your joomla site is in the root of your public_html or www folder.

To remove 1.15.25 Joomla and replace it with 2.5.1 Joomla site to root.
Importing your data to your new Joomla 2.5 instance

Prepare your Joomla 1.15.25 site for export of data

1. Upgrade your existing Joomla 1.15 site to Joomla 1.15.25
2. Download from http://www.eshiol.it/ the Joomla component J2XML 1.5 exporter and install this to your Joomla 1.15.25 site. Export your data as an xml file to your computer.

Install your Joomla 2.5 site, import data from old site and move 2.5 site to root
1. Install a new instance of Joomla 2.5 to a subdirectory of your root i.e public_html/25
2. Download from http://www.eshiol.it/ the Joomla J2XML Importer 1.6.0 and install this component to your Joomla 2.5 site. Import your exported xml file that you exported at 2 above. ( You will have to recreate your menu links as the importer does not do that for you)
3. Install your components and set up the 2.5 site as you want it. Once complete.
4. Go your site/cpanel login and scroll down to databases-MYSql databases and delete the existing 1.15.25 database and database user for 1.15.
5. Then in cpanel/file manager delete all joomla 1.15.25 files and folders from root (Br careful to only delete the Joomla files and leave the 25 directory you installed your Joomla 2.5 instance in. Using cpanel file manager for this is quicker than deleting via ftp.
Once completed
6. Copy all 2.5.1 files and folders from sub directory to root ( Copy don’t move) I used Cpanel file manger copy function for this.
7. Edit configuration.php and change paths to $log_path and $tmp_path
8. Check new site is visible in your browser .Test login to backend, test various functions and components. Your site should be good to go.
9. If happy site is working as it should delete the original sub directory you created your new 2.5 site in.

Hope this helps
Kili
