Joomla! Update not working

Post by Joshua_D » Fri Aug 02, 2013 5:45 pm

Hey folks,

I'm having some issues with my Joomla! site build. The Joomla! update feature isn't working, and the extension manager update method isn't working. I did manage to update by manually copying/extracting the files, but I'm concerned about the auto update issue. Also, the Joomla! Update plugin wants me to "update" to 2.5.11 although I've already updated to 2.5.14.

#1. I was running 2.5.10. When 2.5.11 the Joomla update plugin didn't recognize the update. At the time, I wasn't aware of the Extension Manager Update method, so I just wrote the files manually and upgrade to 2.5.11

#2. When the latest 2.5 update was released, the Joomla Update Plugin recognized the update, but the update plugin showed the latest version to be 2.5.11, which the file it was going to update was 2.5.14

When I tried to update via the Joomla! Update plugin, I received the error, "Could not open /var/www/html/newcity(localhost)/administrator/components/com_admin/sql/mysql/2.5.10.sql for writing, which you can see in "20130802-joomla-update-3.jpg"

#3. I then tried to update via the Extension Manager method, and I received another error, "-1 - An erro has occured. Copy Failed"

#4 Finally, I justed updated to 2.5.14 via manually copying the files, well extracting the zip file into the directory. That seems to have updated my site to 2.5.14, but the Joomla Update still wants to update to 2.5.11! which you can see in "20130802-joomla-update-5.jpg"

Any ideas?

Thank you in advance

This is what you can do
Go to the extension manager and select the update tab
Click on purge cache
Click on find updates
The joomla updater will now report the correct updates

Thanks Brian! :D

That seemed to fixed the Joomla Updater. Hopefully the next update will install properly.

Hi everybody,

I have encountered a similar problem updating from 2.5.14 to 2.5.16.

I'm receiving the error message is "Could not open /var/www/html/joomla/administrator/components/com_admin/sql/updates/mysql/2.5.12.sql for writing" when I try to use the Joomla update plugin.

The extension manager update method isn't working too ("An error has occurred. Copy failed").

I've read the thread above and I still have a doubt: can I just "brutally" copy the files via FTP, from my unzipped folder to my www folder? Or will this affect (or worse, compromise) the database update in some way, now or in the future?

Thank you very much for your help!!

Yes you can "brutally" copy the files via ftp however make sure you go into the Extension Manager afterwards and check the Database structure is OK - you may ned to click the "Fix" button.

But then you should investigate your setup to see why the auto updates don't work for future updates.

Hope this helps

I'm on Joomla! 3.4.1 and there's been some weirdness for about three months (cannot save modules when using Isis template, so I need to switch to Hathor). I found some other threads re: this specific problem but nothing worked.

So I noticed that some extensions were v 2.5.0 as compared to a perfectly working 3.4.1 site which had comparable 3.0.0 versions. I was able to delete these 2.5.0 files using the Extension Manager and then reupload the latest joomla install, clear my cache, and the updated 3.0.0 files appeared.

However, the Joomla! Update component cannot be uninstalled and is currently v 2.5.0 when it should actually be 3.0.0. This may be the source of all my woes and I'm at a lose for how to correct the problem. Any suggestions?
