I followed Leo's excellent primer on upgrading my Joomla! site from 1.7.3 to 2.5.4 and everything appeared to go without a hitch - no error messages, no issues with quick icon display in the Admin control panel. I logged out after the upgrade and came back to the Admin site after two days only to find that instead of being presented with a log-in page, mydomain.com/administrator resolved to an Akeeba Admin page saying "Backup required!"

In essence, I was automatically logged in to the back-end and presented an Akeeba page I'd never seen before. Even more strangely, the Log Out hot link in the upper right corner of the page would not in fact log me out, and there were no other links or quick icons available to navigate to the Admin control panel.

I used a backup to restore to 1.7.3 and would love to hear some suggestions how I might effectively upgrade the site to 2.5.
