Upgrade 1.7.2 to which?

Joomla versions 2.5, 1.7 and 1.6 are all end-of-life since December 31st 2014 and are no longer supported. Please use Joomla 3.x instead.

Upgrade 1.7.2 to which?

Hi There,
My 1.7.2 contact form has been hijacked and I need to upgrade. I looked at the doc:

...but am not sure if 1.7.2 to 2.5 is the same upgrade process as 1.5 to 2.5. Also, it's unclear to me what the benefits are of 2.5 as opposed to just going all the way to 3. Any hints are much appreciated. Thanks!

And if you feel not comfortable with the process as described you might consider purchasing SP Upgrade http://extensions.joomla.org/extensions ... tion/15609 which allows for a fast and easy automated upgrade from J1.7. I published a Practical Guide and if you just change the 2.5 to 3.3.1 you are all good to go
