I have an existing component and wish to add a new menu item type.
I have read and re-read the instructions on adding a menu item type using the model view component but can't get it to add a new item.

This is on a new 2.5.4 setup. The component installs fine and all works except for the new menu item I wish to have.

Usually the component automatically adds the new "menu item type" if appropriate. Are you sure the component is 2.5 compatible? What is the name of the component?

It is my component and yes it is 2.5 compatible. I understand it should automatically add the menu item but it doesn't. and the default.xml files all look the same except for the title and message. Here is the contents of my default.xml file:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<metadata>
<layout title="Write Ad">
<message>
<![CDATA['Write Ad']]>
</message>
</layout>
</metadata>
