Having trouble making direct links to files within the site

I coded something in Jumi for a multilingual site. I wanted a link to a custom file within a directory in the site. I coded the link as http://domain.com/folder/file.php but it keeps changing and making it http://domain.com/es/folder/file.php (or what ever the language is) and then gives a page not found. I've tried relative urls as well but no joy. I even tried to add the links to a hidden menu item and that didn't work either.

Do I really need to make folders for each language and put my files in there? (folder called 'es' and folder called 'en'?)

Note: I just realized this is the board for 2.5 - I am using the latest 3.x with the latest std Falang version.
