Article Access levels not working

The other day I updated my joomla version from 2.5.6 to 2.5.11

i had my home menu set up to show featured articles
i had 2 articles set to featured
one with the access level of guest to show to non logged in users
and one set to regiistered to show to logged in users

this was working

after the upgrade this is no longer working
now both articles are showing to both non logged in users and logged in users

here is the state of the site now

you can see that the welcome page is showing above the page titled "learn kung fu online"

the menu items are still showing up correctly
the ones set to guest are only showing to non logged in users and the ones set to registered are only showing to logged in users


i also did a test
and created an new article and set the view access to special
then opened the site in a totatlly different browser
with a clear cache
and as a no logged in user i can see the article set to special level


does anyone know whats going on with this
it was working perfectly before the upgrade- is this a bug?

just an update if you go to the site you will not see 2 pages on the home page
i have sort of worked around the issue because it is a live site
and i just can not have this issue live

so i set only the guest level article to featured
and created a new menu item for logged in users called welcome and set the menu item to registered
and created a redirect on the login page to go to the welcome menu item page

its not a nice as it was before with the 2 featured articles on one menu link
showing differently to non logged in users and logged in users


so there is still this issue with me not being able to set article view access levels that actually work...
