user sees blank backend

Hello all,
I created a category 'x' and then a user 'x' (parent public). In global configuration I gave permissions to admin login/access admin interface and create/delete/edit. In categories I opened category x and gave user x the permissions of create/delete/edit. In articles I gave permission of user x for everything (configure through edit own). When I login as user x I see nothing but a blank screen (well, it says Administration and there is a thin blue horizontal rectangle). As you might surmise, I'm trying to create a user that has access to only one category through the backend. I've googled up a few earlier threads on this matter but was unable to resolve the issue. Any help in dealing with the joomal ACL would be much appreciated. ;)

It sounds like you haven't given permission to access the article manager.

Go to Article Manager.
Click Options.
Click the Permissions Tab.
Click Category X to expand the permissions for that category.
Make sure "Access Administration Interface" is set to allowed.
