"Sorry but the board is temporarily unavailable, please try again in a few minutes."

Am I the only one getting this error message all the time when I am browsing the joomla forum?

.
Generally it seems to happen when the link spammers are attacking.
When I see that message I go looking, and generally find some spammer posts.

These are the type of spammer posts which have many, many, many links in each post.
My guess is the forum anti-spam-link-checker-function-thingy is having a hard time and it slows the forum.

phpBB3 will try to send that "unavailable" message rather than just choking and dying.
But you will still sometimes see MySQL errors during these periods.
I generally only see MySQL-has-died errors when trying to report these spammer link-list posts.

Come back later after the spam posts have been deleted and the forum will be back to normal.

It's happening to me a lot at the moment but I don't see any spam messages. This only started to happen a couple of months ago. I'm not sure that it is overloading by spammers.

I've been seeing this all the time lately. And at work I am forced to re-login every ten seconds or so. Yesterday I couldn't get on the board at all, all day.

I am also getting this same problem, is there already an ongoing discussion on how to improve this space?

All the time. It's getting ridiculous.

This is unbarable, any news on a solution to this? It's getting worse by the day.

Is this a financial issue (server upgrades needed?) or a purely technical issue?

I wonder how much $ spammers are costing the world each year, scum of the earth. And you have to wonder, how profitable is spamming really in 2012? Are there still enough people buying penis enlargement, counterfeit goods and magic pharmaceuticals from dodgy websites to make this a viable business model? I guess stealing credit card info is at the core of the business idea, but still.

Maybe enabling captcha on new posts could be a temporary solution?

We're hoping some server upgrades and configuration changes we have now made will provide a permanent resolution to this issue.

Thanks for your patience while this was deployed.

Yes, hopefully this issue has been solved since last weekend with a server upgrade:
