Is it OK to be a little preachy in my sig?

Post by cassius » Thu Feb 21, 2013 9:18 pm

I've been posting on and off here for a while. Generally, my habit is to come here when I have encountered a problem, ask for help, but also to try to help at least one person for every question I ask. Also, now that I am among those answering questions posed by others, I realize that it is a bit frustrating to give advice and then have the OP simply disappear without remarking on whether or not the advice was helpful. I view the forum as a sort of knowledge base and as somebody who always tries to self-serve when I have a problem, I know how aggravatomg it can be to not have a definitive answer in a thread as to whether or not the OP solved their issue.

So I was thinking to start using a sig which contained my two golden rules that I now try to abide by when I use this forum. However, I wanted to make sure that this would be OK and also that there wouldn't be any concern that I was being a "backseat mod" lol. I'm not sure what will fit in the sig, but I was thinking of using something like this:

My Two Golden Rules For Improving the Forum:
1) When you ask for help in the forum, take the time to "close the loop". Report back if you solved your problem and how. This helps prevent the same question from be asked again in the future.
2.) Try to "make a fair trade" with the community. When you ask for help, try to find somebody else who you can help.
My two golden rules improving this forum
1) Close the loop on threads you start. Others with the same problem will read your thread in the future. Help them by sharing what worked.
2) Try to answer one question for every question you ask.

Yes, I see forums in general as knowlegde bases.
It can be frustrating indeed when you are searching for a solution and you find similar problems that got answered, but without any feedback of the topic starter (hence, you don't know how good the answer was).

I don't think see any problem with that signature...
IMHO it's not "Improving the Forum" but somewhat broader: "improving open source software knowledge sharing on the internet" ;)

Thanks.

Had to squeeze things down a bit to get within the character limit. I guess this sig sort of stamps me as a pedant. But oh well. :D
