I vote for Filezilla for uploading, managing multiple files, uploading image files, etc.

I also use the cPanel feature with my hosting service for compressing files, database management, etc.

I use Notepad++ - for editing CSS, etc. They have an ftp plugin that makes editing things like your php and css files very easy. If you do it right, it updates the local copy and the remote file when you save. That way you don't have to download, edit and upload all the time.

Joomla does not need a special FTP program - just use one that works on your OS.

And you don't need additional software, you can use your filesystem browser or web browser (at least on windows)!

My preference is Filezilla but the passwords are not encrypted so I use http://www.snapfiles.com/get/keepasspro.html to store username/pass
