What is the default usergroup in the Users component? You can check it from User Manager - Options - Component - New User Registration Group. It is usually Registered for newly registered users.

The error message you see does not come from the standard Joomla user component. Are you using some additional extensions for registration or has the user component perhaps been modified

Which particular version of Joomla 3.x are you using?

In Module Manager you can find out from the settings of the BT Login module the component it is integrated with. "Users component" means the standard Joomla login and registration, where the error message does not originate from.

One of the other possible extensions is the likely source of the error: K2, JoomSocial, Community Builder, Joomshopping

Which extension from this list is BT Login integrated with?

Is this what it should be set to? Any other suggestions?

Try the following: unpublish the BT Login module and publish the standard Joomla Login module and see if the error disappears.

Tried that, still having same issue, looking like BT login is just being used to add the login button to the top right of the site. Maybe something with the user group settings? Users are able to chose between 2 groups when registering, would that have anything to do with it?

Normally new users do not get any option to select their user group. Check the html folder of your template and see if it has a subfolder 'com_user'. A registration subfolder may contain an override which has the selection of the user group.

if this helps... in plugin manager system usergroup selector - it has allowed usergroups as the two options - default selected usergroups is set as one of those options, do you think that is correct?

Which particular Extension in JED (Joomla Extensions Directory) is that plugin, or is it a custom development?

All i can see is " Plugin Manager: System - Usergroup Selector " is basically allows for a drop down menu to select from the two options when registering a user. I tried disabling this as well and registering. No luck on that one.

The problem is caused by some incompatibility or bug in the extension. The standard Joomla registration does not give the user any option to select the usergroup. Uninstall the Usergroup Selector and the error message will be gone. That will prove that the plugin causes the problem.
