Can't change Favicon in address bar
Hello everyone,
I have a question about the favicon in the address bar and how to change it. I was wondering how to go about replacing the original Joomla one that comes with the installation.
I have tried to replace it by replacing the file favicon.ico in the template folder with one I created, but it doesnt seem to do the trick.
I have tried to refresh the browser, empty the cache and have also tried on another browser but no luck.
Is there something I am missing?
I am using the prostar template and the location of the favicon I have replace is:
/www/templates/prostar/favicon.ico
Anybody have any ideas? Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Tom

Re: Can't change Favicon in address bar
UPDATE
I have managed to update the favicon.ico file in directory /templates/favicon.ico by replacing the standard joomla one with one that I have made.
I then had to go to punch in the address bar:
/templates/protostar/favicon.ico (I am using the protostar template)
this refreshed the favicon on the top of the web page, however the address bar favicon does not display.
Still looking for an answer to this. If anyone can help that would be great. Am I doing anything wrong? Question? Comments? Greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Tom

Figured it out, looks like the browser cache hadn't cleared properly. Started to work on it's own after a while.

Re: Can't change Favicon in address bar
The point of the update is that anybody tying to figure the same issue out would have the solution, regardless of whether I figured it out or somebody else on this forum, and not as you say, my life update.
I believe that the point of this forum is for people to help out other people, and sometimes if we find the solution we should post to give back to the community.
I do believe that I did post to the appropriate section as this is the General Questions/New to Joomla Section.
I did a search under this section but didn't come up with anything, so I decided to post.
Maybe next time you can provide some useful information as opposed to posting something that doesnt help.

Re: Can't change Favicon in address bar
Hi
I have been trying to do the same thing as I had achieved this on an old Joomla template. But I can't find anywhere to change the file name. On the old template it was under Global configuration, but I can't see it on this one (Jm-0013).
How did you get to the path /templates/protostar/favicon.ico?
Help would be appreciated
thanks

Re: Can't change Favicon in address bar
Hi karenbee,
Are you using the filezilla ftp application to transfer your files to your server? If you are then under your root directory (the first directory when it logs you in) you will find the templates directory. If you click in there you will see all the templates you have installed. If you are using the protostar template same as me, then you can double click the folder to enter it and inside you should find the file favicon.ico
You can use a site like:
http://www.favicon.cc/
to create your favicon.
Once you have it ready you can name it favicon.ico and then replace the file in the directory by uploading it to the directory and overwriting the file which will have the same name.
If you are using cpanel file manager to upload files to your site then once you have your favicon prepared you can upload to the directory and overwrite using that method.
I am not quite sure if you need to load your favicon through your web browser or just wait for your browser to clear the cache, but I guess it can't hurt.
To do this, type this in to your web browser:
www.yourdomain.com/templates/protostar/favicon.ico
(where yourdomain is the domain name of your site, which is what you have registered with your domain registrar, and protostar if you are using protostar template otherwise you would type in the name of the template you are using).
When you do this you will see just your favicon load in the min browser window. Again I am not sure if this makes your browser refresh the favicon into it faster.
Remember to clear your cache and cookies. If your browser still doesn't update then just leave it for a few hours and see it has updated, and try clearing your cache again and cookies. It took mine a few hours to clear. Also maybe try a different browser, for instance if you use Internet Explorer, give firefox a shot.
Hope it goes well.
Tom

Re: Can't change Favicon in address bar
Hi Tom
No, not using FTP but the control panel to upload files/images. I understand how to create it and upload it, but my problem is that I can't find where the original file is stored in order to overwrite/replace it.
I'm using a template called Jm-0013 and in fact not even sure if I can do it as this template doesn't have it's own icon anyway. It's just blank unlike all the others which seem to have the Joomla! logo.
Can you shed any light on that?
Thanks for troubling to reply.

Re: Can't change Favicon in address bar
Hi karenbee,
I believe you have to add the code to your html to be able to call up the favicon.
I have found two interesting articles for you:
http://www.itoctopus.com/how-to-add-a-f ... la-website
And also from joomla docs:
http://docs.joomla.org/Changing_the_site_favicon
I believe if you place this line:
<link rel="shortcut icon" href="http://yoursite.com/templates/your_template/favicon.ico" />
In your index.php in the HTML head section, then if you put favicon.ico in your template folder it should work.
Hopoe this helps,
Tom

Hi Karen,
No problem, it's weird it started working by itself, maybe it was a cache issue. Glad to hear it started working.
