You can install one of a number of server products with Apache, MySQL and PHP bundled into one application:
- XAMPP
- Wampserver
- Uniform Server

Microsoft's WebMatrix comes with the IIS web server and it even installs Joomla for you.

It is possible to configure virtual hosts in Apache and install several sites, each with their own document root, if required. Dummy domain names in the hosts file instead of just 'localhost' as your domain make development sites look very real.

If you prefer to manage a server in the LAMP environment, you can run different versions of Linux under Windows by installing first Oracle Virtualbox or VMware Player first and then a Linux ISO distribution.
