I was having this problem trying to login from my phone after update to 3.4.1. Following the advice to change Login Module redirect from Default to Home page, and that seems to have done the trick for me.

I have done much research into this.
I installed a new clean 'one-click' install by softaculous into a sub domain.
The login works. (for now)

After a lot of comparison between the databases of the new working site and the old working site - including all the cookies/sessions and deleting them for cleaning etc I have found the only difference is that the the old site creates records in the "xxx_user_keys" table and the new one doesn't.

Both sites have system Captcha disabled - in the new site it was never turned on.
BUT the old site had the Captcha activated and then disabled.
Does this have any bearing? What part of the CMS produces the xxx_user_keys records?

I obviously tried deleting the xxx_user_keys records in the old site - but they were re-made as soon as I tried to log in again.
After the 'failed' login - the site did re-direct to the home page - showing its getting right through the login process successfully.
But no editing icons show in the front end - and no login occurs in the back end - and no error messages appear either.
best regards
watsonrj :-)

The common factor is the sites encountering the problem are sites that need Group Permissions set the same as Owner Permissions in order for Joomla to work correctly. 775 instead of 755

Which needs to be mentioned is a problem with their hosting server setup that sucks --> change host!

I started this topic and it continues as a mystery to me that it is not considered a "bug". The latest post indicates that there is a setting in the hosting environment that needs to be changed in order for the login to work properly.

My environment is a dedicated server so I need to know where to go to make the change as I'd love not to have this problem anymore. I'm open to receiving more specific guidance.

I just spent about 15 minutes with my hosting company discussing the recommendation to set Group Permissions the same as Owner Permissions in order for Joomla to work correctly.(775 instead of 755). The response back to me is that making this change will result in an Internal Server Error and thus the hosting company is not allowed to make the change. Security (modsec rules) limits their ability to make the change. Additionally, making this change would make the server easier to hack.

I have been extremely happy with the hosting company where we have grown from a shared environment to a dedicated server for the complicated environment. I certainly want Joomla to operate properly. Is there any other answer to this problem? Could it possibly be a bug in 3.4.1?

Here is the FPA data from a site that experienced the problem of user login failure. To "patch" the problem I opened the module assignment for the Main Menu and selected "on all pages" instead of the logical "on selected pages". Logins then worked but do not understand why.

Follows the FPA data:

You misread
"The common factor is the sites encountering the problem are sites that need Group Permissions set the same as Owner Permissions in order for Joomla to work correctly. 775 instead of 755"

It means they were set 775 instead of being set 755. NOT that they should be changed to 755.

ktwatson wrote:In Global config ... click 'Save' click 'Save' a second time. What happens-nothing
Strange ... you should get a message saying either the configuration saved or it failed to save ? (from the look of the fpa then it said 'successfully saved')

In Admin System >>> Cache ... Purge cache and Expired cache

If no avail
To rule out a problem with the Template. Set Protostar as default ... set the login to required menu items and test login.

Did you purge the cache and expired cache in System >>> cache ?

Do you have two menu items pointing to the same Article (or component etc) instead of the second one being menu item type 'Alias' ?

@ktwatson

Received your PM with user/pass
Was able to successfully log in to front and admin.

Noticed it is in a subfolder of the main site. However the link given on the landing page for the public site that is a subdomain ... but the subdomain does not exist.

In any case the login works ... please remove the account now. Not sure why you are having problems ... perhaps there have been so many changes (sub domains etc.) after logging in previously that it is browser cache causing the problem.

Just a tip, try to login to your site using the incognito mode of chrome browser, really helps a lot to get a good clean refresh of your pages. When I build website I have always an extra window open in incognito mode for that reason.

May be check the "permissions" in the "Global Configuration"
/administrator/index.php?option=com_config
I couldn't log-in in offline mode, but changing the permissions solved my problem.

If you need to change Permissions to get Joomla to work then there is something wrong with your server setup.

Hi,

I did not see that in ktwatson's joomla the community builder is installed but in my case that was the problem. I had cb 1.9 installed which is not compatible with joomla 3.x
So I have just installed 1.9.1 and the login in the frontend works again.
Maybe this will help someone who find this thread.
