cannot install 3.6 upgrade package. xml file not found
HI I'm running joomla 3.4.5 have the package Joomla_3.6.0-Stable-Update_Package.
I don't have the install component on my admin component list.
so I have tried uploading the unzipped package to site/tmp and using install 'from directory', that path.
always it says
Warning
JInstaller: :Install: Can't find XML setup file.
Error
Path does not have a valid package.
Unable to find install package
firstly the install component says its available, but I don't have it in the components menu.
secondly obviously its not working using menu, extensions, manage, install from directory.
i also tried the upload package unzipped mode.
Can anyone shed any light on why it won't upgrade, and if the xml file really is not being found, where is this XML setup file supposed to be, in the upgrade package fileset?
permissions is 755 on the tmp folder that i've uploaded the unzipped fileset to.
thanks

Re: cannot install 3.6 upgrade package. xml file not found
From version 3.5, the installer can no longer be used. You have to use the updater component.
You are very far behind in updating. Update to 3.4.8 first.

Re: cannot install 3.6 upgrade package. xml file not found
You could try "administrator/index.php?option=com_joomlaupdate" in the address bar.
Issue with migrating? Include logs/joomla_update.php in your report!

Re: cannot install 3.6 upgrade package. xml file not found
HI.. thanks for the replies.
i've tried adding administrator/index.php?option=com_joomlaupdate to the url.
i get
'No updates available.
You are on the "Default" update channel. Through this channel you'll receive notifications for all updates of the current Joomla! release (3.x)
You already have the latest Joomla version, 3.4.5.
indeed i have v 3.4.5 running.
IT looks to me on web, as commented already, upgrading to anything above and including 3.5 might need to be done through the update installer, thats my issue, how to get the updater component to work, rather hard when even its not in my component menu, and the url string suggested using com_joomlaupdate, returns a response indicating it can't find anythinng above 3.4.5 to upgrade to.
I could try a 3.4.8 upgrade package upgrade, see if it clears the above prob where apparently the upgrade portal isn't offering anything above 3.4.5... but first...
...Any other ideas about the xml file being inaccessible in the 3.6 upgrade package ?

Re: cannot install 3.6 upgrade package. xml file not found
You need to clear the cache in that case, see the button bar of Joomla! Update.
Indeed, you NEED to use Joomla! Update component for updating to j3.5 or higher. No longer it is possible to use Extensions->Install. The updates no longer contain the xml file identifying it as a file package to be installed.

Re: cannot install 3.6 upgrade package. xml file not found
HI and thanks for the support.
Solved.. as you say, above 3.4.8 install by trad methods isnt possible,
in my setup on 3.4.5 there is no joomla update component showing, there is also no reference to the vital joomla 3.6 availability in the pink bar at control panel that should show it.
after installing 3.4.8 upgrade via an uploaded fileset in /tmp, 3.4.8 then shows correctly a reference to joomla 3.6 in the pink bar, with an upgrade button. i have never ever seen the alleged 'joomla update' component listed.
so 3.4.5 has to be upgraded to 3.4.8, by ftp to /tmp and using extension manager 'from folder'
then.. 3.4.8 shows the vital upgrade button to 3.6 in the control panel pink bar.
the automatic 3.6 upgrade seems to have worked fine on my first test site.
-------------
carrying out the same 3.4.5 to 3.4.8 upgrade on my second test site, i noticed the pink control panel bar was still missing the reference to 3.6 upgrade and upgrade button.
out of guessing, i enabled the update sites, core joomla item and there and behold i then have the 3.6 joomla upgrade button in the pink bar.
So i think this pretty well explains whats been going on.. if admin can't access the upgrade joomla url, theres no error message and no way of upgrading to 3.6 until that thing appears in the pink bar.
I wonder how many others have been battling like i have, over this.

@leo: ***off-topic*** It is not possible for us "mere mortals" to edit our own replies 24 hours after we wrote them. Sorry, only a forum moderator can perform that feat of magic. We used to be able to edit our posts after the "grace period" expired, but I think someone has changed the rules.
Good advice—to use the resolved post icon—but, unfortunately, infeasible.

I know it su**s. I have the same issue and after the 'upgrade" to this horrible PHPbb-forum template (it is horrendous!) we have this crap indeed... Cannot help it connect with a Joomla global mod on the forums and you will get a ('we will look into it') reply which does not help since this forum template is horrible and user unfriendly as stated as kindly as possible (In my experience: "It Su***s big time!) Editing your reply within 36 hours as previous is no longer an optionsozzled wrote:We used to be able to edit our posts after the "grace period" expired, but I think someone has changed the rules.

Re: cannot install 3.6 upgrade package. xml file not found
You should talk with the people from Akeeba about this. This is the reason we now have Extensions->Manage->Update site. Joomla no longer deactivates them silently when they can't be reached!hareslade1 wrote: out of guessing, i enabled the update sites, core joomla item and there and behold i then have the 3.6 joomla upgrade button in the pink bar.
