I have just found the "install" file in the installation folder (which i renamed instead of deleting) and in there under item 2 it mentions that Joomla only works with MySql NOT Postgresql!!
Just in case anyone else is committed to freeing themselves from Oracle and doesn't notice the warning i thought it might be worth mentioning somewhere a bit less obscure!!
To be fair people have, on many occasion, tried to gently push me away from Postgresql but i really needed something a bit more direct.
