From 1.6.5 to 3.0.3 advice please [solved]
I have a 1.6.5 Joomla site, that I need to update.
The site will not automatically update any further than 1.6.5,
and this site needs to stay active while I do the work,
so am starting again on a new server.
I'll install 3.0.3 on a new hyper-V virtual server running windows 2008 server,
is it possible to transfer to database, design and content from my old site,
onto this new installation?
Any advice welcome.
Thank you in advance
Steve

Re: From 1.6.5 to 3.0.3 advice please
Hi,
I've recently had to do the same thing for a client but I upgraded to Joomla 2.5 instead, which uses the same framework as 1.6.
I believe, but I may be wrong, that there will be a way within 2.5 to upgrade to 3.5 (when it is released). I think that this would probably be your best option.
If you go straight from 1.6 to 3.0, they use totally different structures (boostraps etc) so I don't think it is possible.
The alternative is to find a template that closely matches the one that you are using within 3.0 - and then copy and paste the content over.
Sorry - I can't think of a better solution.

I think I may go to 2.5 then.
Did you install 1.6 on the new server, then upgrade?
Or
Install 2.5 and migrate stuff over?
Thanks
Steve

No - I installed 2.5 and then imported the 1.6 template via extension manager.
1.6 Templates are usually 2.5 compatible, so you shouldn't have an issue.
Then once 3.5 becomes available, upgrade to it via the 2.5 control panel. However, be aware that not all modules will necessarily be compatible with 3.5 - and your 1.6 template may require modification too. None the less, the platform itself will be upgradable via the 2.5 control panel - which means you won't need to install a new version and transfer content over etc......
Note: this is all theoretical, based on what I have read. Until 3.5 arrives, no one really knows how it is going to work for sure....

Thanks codeboyuk,
Once I have imported the template from my site,
Is there a quick way of migrating the content?

No problem. So - upgrade to 2.5, then when 3.5 becomes available - migrate directly to it from 2.5. Don't worry too much about the 3.0 platform - you don't need it.saudus wrote:Thanks codeboyuk,

This should give you a couple of years breathing space. It also gives you time to look at the modules you have installed, to see if there are any 3.0/3.5 compatible versions available (if the current ones you have on site are not immediately compatible). It also gives you time to investigate whether there will be any compatibility issues with your template....All in all, it gives you time to plan - whatever the circumstances.
Apart from copying and pasting, I'm not too familiar with content migration extensions, but it looks like another user is - so they should be able to help

Edit the title as
[Solved]
with a green tick icon
Or hit the report button and ask the mods to edit it. But perhaps wait until you have completed your migration before marking as solved ?
