How to update php on server for Joomla 3.3.6

We run a site on a server with php 5.3 and we want to update to version 5.5.
But once we change it from the server the site stops working.

Actually when we change the php version to 5.4 or 5.5 we get a black page both on administrator and live site.

How we can update the php?

We need to make component updates that require php 5.5.

The details of the error and where it occurred are logged in the PHP error log, if your server has been configured correctly. If you want to get the errors displayed, you can change the variable $error_reporting in the file configuration.php to 'maximum'.

If the extensions with errors are from the Joomla Extension Directory (JED), do they not have a later version?

How we can update the php?

If your hosting company is not helpful, you should consider changing hosting providers.

That is the case, but it is perfectly possible that at least one Joomla third party extension you have installed earlier was either not upgraded to a version compatible with Joomla 3.x or has a bug causing a fatal PHP error, which manifests itself as those blank pages both at the front end and at the back end.

Just to double check, the pages you mention are blank - usually white - and not black?

We don't have to change the joomla or php code.

You may have to do that, depending on what exactly causes the blank pages.

At least the plugin plg_content_geshi is a left-over from Joomla 2.5 and there may be others, too.

You need to turn on the error reporting, as explained, to find out which extension causes the PHP fatal error.

I have uninstalled geshi and put the error reporting on maximum and I got below error:

Which doesn't make sence since the size that tries to allocate is smaller that the allowed memory size.

you can copy one file php.ini in root folder. Then put attribute for php version and memory_limit.

It makes perfect sense. The memory is full to the maximum limit and the request to allocate 12288 bytes cannot be fulfilled by PHP. That is why the error is reported.

You will find this line in the php.ini file:

The maximum memory limit is 256 megabytes or 262144 bytes. Unless you identify the component or plugin which causes the limit to be exceeded in one PHP session, you will need to increase the limit.

There are ways, as suggested, to add a php.ini file to your Joomla folder and increase the limit that way. Do a search in these forums and you will find some advice.

I have a php.ini and put the limit to 512Mb, but still I get the same error.
I also put it on .htaccess but still no luck...

No serious provider on this planet will allow you to change things like memory_limit on a shared hosting! Means: You can put whatever you want there, but if the value is higher than their max limit it will be ignored!
If you're on a vps or dedicated server, you normaly do changes like this to the main .ini file and you have to restart Apache to get these changes done. If you add additional .ini files it depends on your configuration if these ini files are included automatically or not.

I did because naseemj2 brought it up again and I wanted to make it clear that you can't change config options, like in this case memory_limit, on shared hostings.
And what was your reason for that useless question(s)?
