User article permissions not working after 3.0-3.6 update

I updated my website from 3.0 to 3.6.2.
The main issue I'm experiencing is that the individual article permission are no longer allowing users to edit articles after the 3.6 update. I have articles that have specific user groups assigned permission to them. But they are no longer able to have access to edit them. I'm getting the following error:

Edit not permitted.

I can set global permissions for all users for a single user group, but that gives them access to all articles. I want to set permissions for access to edit individual articles to specific user groups.
The specific pages that I've granted access are not greyed out, so that works. But when I go to edit a page, that error pops up.

Any ideas?

Try to logout, clear browser cache, clear joomla cache and login. Also did you fix database?

Tried the database fix, didn't work.

After reading through the article, I ended up implementing the changes mentioned in the last entry, here: https://github.com/joomla/joomla-cms/pull/11511

After updating the two files mentioned, everything works now!
