Warning You cannot access the private section of this site.

Post by DaveLE » Sun Nov 23, 2014 9:25 pm

I have just changed the ability for the public to register by going to User manager>Options and setting allow User Registration to be No. Since making this change it will only allow super users to login. any other login generates the following: Warning You cannot access the private section of this site. The site is running Joomla 3.3.6

I have tried resetting the user registration back to Yes but cannot get anyone, other than a superuser, to be able to login.

I am a novice to Joomal and would be very grateful for any help. Thanks, David

I can't see how disabling the registration extension should effect the ability of existing users to log in but here's my suggestions:

First, can you see in your login module (front end of site), a "register" link? Does clicking that link show the registration screen? Are you able to register as a user from that screen, and activate the account with the activation email link?

Next, Are you able to create users (from administrator end) and then log in using that user's details?

Create test users like user - test123, password test123. See if that will let you log on.

Also in testing, create a dummy article, set permission as "Registered". Create a menu item, permission as "Public" (so you can see the menu item without log on). Attach that article to the menu item.

View the front-end of the site; click the link; it should take you to the log on screen saying "you need to log on to view..."

If you can then log in with that dummy user (test123( then you can rule out a general issue.

Is your site live, now, and accepting users? Before you disabled user registration, did you have any users register? Did they successfully activate accounts? Or are you still testing/developing?

In the user manatger check user accounts are activated.

Finally, it may be that your settings although saved haven't taken effect or it thinks previous settings are still active - clear the joomla cache and browser cache.

Please report back once you have tried the above if the problem has gone away or not.

HI AMurray, thanks for your reply. As to your questions...
- no register link in login
- I can create user from admin but only allows me access if a super user, any other type is not allowed to login
- i created a dummy article with registered status and a public menu item, it didnt allow me to view until I logged in
- site is live, not accepting users since I disabled that option. Previously users had registered and had access as expected.
- all accounts are active in user manager
- i've cleared the joomla and browser caches

Problem still persists. It is not allowing any user with permissions less than super user to login.

All menu items are public apart from one which is registered. All components of public menu items are public and registered for the registered item.
Website in question is http://www.dartsailability.org
Thanks for your input.

Thanks for looking. Website pages etc all working well. Problem is that only a superuser can now login, all other groups, registered etc generate the error " Warning You cannot access the private section of this site". This was not the case before I stopped general users being able to register themselves. any other help much appreciated.

I have just checked Global Configuration>Permissions settings>Registered and found that although the setting is allowed the calculated setting is Locked. This is true for all user types except Super Users. I suspect that this is where my problem is, however what could be locking the login and how can I change it? Any help much appreciated. Thanks

I've changed the default template to Protostar but there is no login box?

I presume that somewhere within the Database there is a 'flag' that locks the login. Would you know where this is and whether I can edit it?

Thanks again.

While you have Protostar as default Template the login form disappears either because the position of the login module does nor exist in Protostar or because it is part of the Template.

Try http://www.dartsailability.org/index.ph ... view=login before and after setting Protostar as default Template. Best guess is that will work in both cases.

Thanks for your input but it doesn't work in either case! Still get the message "Warning
You cannot access the private section of this site." unless the user is a super user.
Do you think it may be a error with the access levels or that something has got corrupted?
Many thanks, David

I'm not aware that I have changed anything to do with access levels only that I suspect that that is where the problem is coming from. The problem did start after I changed the user registration option to be No, maybe this was a co-incidence but all I did after that was to set up a new user with a registered status and then tried to login as the new user. It failed and generated the above error message. I reset the registered option and tried again, no change. I have now set the option to not allow user registration and am hunting for a solution.
Thanks for your help, David

I've got the same issue after upgrading a J-2.5.27 site to J-3.3.6. My site is live and we've allowed all users to be super-users until I can get a fix.

This happened without changing the site to "no registrations".
I've created a test user and can't login without making it a super user.
I've got lots of experience with J 3x and this one baffels me.

Constructive suggestions would be appreciated. I'll post test results on this thread.

Two with a similar issue so tested on my site
  • Site is 3.3.6 updated from 2.5.7
  • Default Template is a customised copy of Protostar
  • User Options ... 'Allow registration' set to 'No'
  • Logged in admin as Super user and created a new user
  • Filled in required fileds ... (fake email address)
  • Left all other fields as default
  • Saved and closed
  • The new user was 'Enabled' and 'Activated' by default
  • Opened up the frontend in another tab and logged in with the new user
    FULL SUCCESS
Conclusion
Caused by 3rd party extension(s)
Caused by Template override
Caused by PEBCAK

Phil, out of interest what template are you using? I'm using RT Cerulean v1.3. Thanks for posting, if I find a fix I'll share here too. Let's hope we can soon find a solution.

WEbdongle, many thanks for trying this out. It was also working fine for me prior to changing the registration setting. Maybe the registration is a red herring and it gets triggered after a period of time, number of users?, number of logins... I'll try posting on the Rocket THeme forum and see if its a known problem there.

I've switched between protostar and bootstrap, both are revised to change only the positions from numeric locations to "left", "right" etc.
My test account can't login unless assigned super user. I'm going to recreate the site on my development platform and follow throught the user login process to determine what's happening. I'll post here.

IMHO it's not the template. For now I'll leave it at that.

EDIT: Problem found! This site was once a J-1.5 upgraded to 2.5 and then to 3.3.6. Somewhere along the line the _assets table picked up a value of 1 in the root.1 Root Asset lft field.
Research and diligence in database analysis narrowed down the search to that record. This was a handy reference http://docs.joomla.org/Fixing_the_assets_table

I think a friend has just found a solution for our site. I created a new super user account and with this he logged in. In Global config>permissions>registered>site login he changed the setting to not allowed. Saved this configuration, went back in and then set it to allowed. This seems to have reset something and now all is working fine. I had tried to change this previously but it didn't work for me? Could a new super user account be different?

Many, many thanks to Webdongle for all your input and to Phil I hope you can soon find a solution.

Is it possible that you changed the setting for 'Registered' ... but when you went back to re-set it that you actually changed the setting on another user group instead of 'Registered' ?

Anything is possible, but, I don't believe so, since I have looked at the global configs many times in trying to find a solution. Also the registered permissions were set as locked, a status that was new to me.

Many thanks for all your assistance.

I met the same problem and I found the soution.
The problem seems to me is that logged in user has no permission to access either default page or some module(more likely user menu).
By default, self registered user is in registered group, while by default the list of items in user menu has no matched privillage to let registered group users to load, thus, a warning message appeared.

To fix it, do one or more changes in the following settings. The main point is to let a logged in user has access to at least one item in user menu.

Menu --> user menu, create, or change a item to the access level that registered user can get access to it.
global config --> system --> permission, set proper permission for registered user
users --> access level, set proper access level for registered user
users --> manage, pick a user that you want to change his/her permission, click the user and you will be able to set this user's assigned group.

Encountering the same error on J3.4.8. Offline access and site login for Registered users were working before, not sure how this happened since there were no major core upgrades or migration done, except for a build update prior to 3.4.8.

Tried below, but no success:

Tried also creating a new registered user, no success either.

Will try fibrevillage's solution and will post results.

I had the same issue after converting a 2.5 installation to a 3.4.8 site. fibrevillage's solution worked for me - specifically "Menu --> user menu, create, or change a item to the access level that registered user can get access to it, set proper permission for registered user"
" i.e. system-->global config --> permissions. In my case the group "members" had no permission to login. So I just changed this setting to login allowed! And it worked!
