Upgrading to Joomla 3.6..... system won't allow it

Post by markzerafa » Sun Sep 25, 2016 1:05 am

Hello,

I have an ancient Joomla 2.5 installation, and i would like to upgrade to the latest Joomla version. The system however tells me that Joomla is up to date, and the following errors are displayed:

Error loading component: com_joomlaupdate, 1
Error loading component: com_joomlaupdate, 1

I would appreciate any helpful suggestions please. I would not wish to lose my content either.

Many thanks

Mark

The very first thing you should do is backup your site .

Have you seen this guide for migrating..... http://forum.joomla.org/viewtopic.php?f=710&t=793171.

There are several steps to take in preparation for migrating one system to the next.

Can you advise which 2.5.x version you're using? (2.5.28 is the latest/last of the 2.5.x series). Also what is your PHP version?

For why it can't find 3.6.x, I believe one reason could be that if your PHP version is too old for any newer Joomla version to run on it won't advise you that version is available to migrate/update to. A second reason might be that you're on the wrong "update channel" but I can't remember where/how to find that info in V2.5 or if that is relevant in this case.

The latest version (3.6.2) requires at least (minimum) PHP 5.3.10 but recommends PHP 5.6.x or PHP 7.x

The system requirements are here: https://docs.joomla.org/Technical_requirements

To answer the above questions (joomla version, PHP version), please post the FPA Report to a reply on this thread. There may be other factors besides those I have mentioned.

See the pink section, top of the screen: http://forum.joomla.org/viewtopic.php?f=621&t=582860

my PHP seems to be 5.2.17, so that could be the problem

That IS the problem https://docs.joomla.org/Requirements. You cannot run Joomla 3.6.2 on that stock old outdated prehistoric PHP-version

The upgrade itself I explained in plain language here https://docs.joomla.org/Requirements
