Moving Joomla 2.5 code to 3.x

Post by gaijinco » Mon Sep 26, 2016 6:16 pm

I pay someone to create a site for me. He did it in Joomla 2.5. After a year I wanted to start doing things for myself so I ask him to hand me the code. He gave me all the code (including directories like /administrator /templates, etc) and an SQL script.

I bought some hosting and they have support for Joomla 3.6.2 so I want to put the old code in my new hosting. I understand that the template and some of the components might not work, what would be the best way to do this migration?

Since I can't access the old Joomla console I'm not sure what was used before.

Alternatively, is there a way to do a quick installation of the old code, something like uploading the old code and running the SQL script? The script doesn't include the creation of the database, just the tables, so if the names of the database doesn't match, where can I change the code to find the new DB?

Thanks a lot!

You should check the installed extensions that you have and make sure that you update them all to the latest version. For those that are no longer compatible with Joomla 3.x, then you should make sure that they are compatible manually or you should switch to another supported extension.

Now, going back to your original question, you should update to Joomla 3.6.2, but your website should still work on the new environment (unless it is a very old version of Joomla 2.5, which can be fixed easily). All you need to do is to extract the Joomla website and then re-import the database, and then modify the configuration file to make it reflect the new server settings.
