Server Upgrade for Joomla 3.6.x

Post by girkers » Mon Sep 26, 2016 9:01 am

Over the weekend I started work on a website I host locally on a CentOS 6.8 server I have built myself and I was able to update the Joomla site from version 3.5.x to 3.6.0 however now I cannot update the server any further as I get a 403 error when trying.

I checked the system requirements for the latest version of Joomla and found that both my version of php and MySQL were out of date. I was able to update the version of php without too many issues, but I am behind the eight-ball when it cames to MySQL

I am currently running version 5.1 of MySQL and Joomla recommends a minimum version of 5.5, sounds simple enough however MySQL requires you to do each upgrade incrementally, i.e. 5.1 -> 5.2 -> 5.3 and so on, however there are no packages for those incremental versions.

Thus I am considering rebuilding my server using CentOS 7 and installing the packages and getting Joomla set up on this server. This leads me to the question can you migrate from one server to another server with disparate versions of software, if so is there a guide somewhere or is this issue fraught with danger?

Cheers for any assistance.

Check your update servers for the https protocol. Replace it with http and try the update again.

Most people migrate to a different infrastructure using Akeeba backup. Depending on the differences you might need to configure it properly.
Issue with migrating? Include logs/joomla_update.php in your report!
Blank screen? Verify pagesource for HTML code (javascript error)
Installation failing on populating database? Install with set_time_limit(0)
Document your customizations!

MySQL upgrade can be a pain and yes the best way forward is to install MySQL from scratch.

You shouldn't see much issue, if at all when you migrate the site from MySQL 5.1 to 5.6.
