Site stuck on 3.4.8 Topic is solved

Hi All

I have recently upgraded one of my sites from J2.5 and now run on J3.4.8. However I can not get it to install the next release via the joomla update,The version it is saying to goto next is J3.6.5. however using the update tool I get this message;

ERROR:
The archive file is corrupt, truncated or archive parts are missing

If i try installing the same update (Downloaded zip file) via the manual install i get:

JInstaller: :Install: Can't find XML setup file.

The site is currently on PHP 5.6 (Version the J2.5 was on) I am trying to get it to PHP8.1. I know the components work as its running on another site I have thats at J3.10.11.

Could it be the site on PHP 5.6 wont allow me to install newer versions? I cant go up though the PHP versions either as provider does not have them to use!

Any suggestions greatly appreciated!

Install wampserver on your pc,download your site to the pc (preferably using akeeba) and install there. With wampserver you can change php and mysql on the fly. Easy peasy to update your site,when your done use akeeba to restore on your server.

3.4.8 is the last version that can be installed as an extension.

Is curl and allow_url_fopen enabled on the server ?

Just follow this simple steps:

1) create a backup of database and the current joomla files already on the system;
2) Download the upgrade package from this link:
Joomla! 3.6.5 Upgrade Package (.zip)
You need to scroll down and get the upgrade package. this is 3rd from the bottom.
3) Unzip the download the package in a temp folder;
4) Copy and paste the extracted files on to your current Joomla Installation.
5) Log in as Super User to fix the database
6) This will upgrade your joomla installation to version 3.6.5
7) Keep the backups you created for about a week until you are satisfied that everything is working as expected.

In a few weeks try to upgrade Joomla again to version 3.10 or 3.11 which ever is the last version in 3.x series.

Do not do this. This will destroy your J! website.

So your solution is to stay on 3.4.8 and pray to god to fix it!

The guy is stuck and he needs to take drastic action. It won't get fixed unless he does what I suggested. He has got the backups anyway so there is absolutely no risk nvolved and there is a likihood for his site to be upgraded.

I tried it on my machine with identical Joomla versions - 3.4.8 ==> 3.6.5 and I don't see any problems at all. I can post screenshots and video of what I did if the Moderator will allow me.

No, the correct solution is to use the Joomla! Update component to update from J! 3.4.8 to J! 3.6.5. The "manual method" (to replace the files in the filesystem) was discredited years ago. No-one should attempt to update J! by overwriting the filesystem with an update "package".

He is stuck. The only option is to sit tight and prey to god and it will get fixed or he can try my method which works because I have tested it before posting.

Backups have to be used sometimes otherwise what is the point of backups? They are not for pleasure or to pass time.

I was going to give this option a try using the manual method (Method C) as been suggested above.

I cant get the Joomla update to work via normal method or custom directory or even from /tmp folder. So think this is my best chance?

I am unsure where to find the cURL info. but i have a J3 site running on the same server that has been updated over the years from 3.5 to the latest version. So know it works. just seems to be stuck getting this site of 3.4.8.

This error;

is from when i do the update using the default settings in the joomla update not the extension manager. So hence my questions as seems odd it comes up with this message!

You need to know what has broken your website. The FPA report will give us some of that information.

You have made a few improvements and that’s good.

You should also change Max. Input Time to 60. (Max. Input Time = -1 will cause errors with the Joomla! Update component.)

FYI: Agora Pro is useless with J! 3.x; its developers abandoned the product several years ago. I recommend that you uninstall it. It doesn’t work.

beez5 and beez20 templates were designed for J! 2.5 and do not work with J! 3.x. You should also uninstall them too.

As we’ve seen, there are always ways to improve things so that you can get unstuck.

I will Look into the time and adjust them cheers for the pointers!. The key is to keep my forum. I have had it since 2008 and has lots of posts. I know its a dead forum in term of support but i have tested it on my other site with j3.10.11 and php8.1 and it works. So that is the reason I am updating the site, and one reason i stayed on J2.5. for as long as i did, until i ran the test to prove it could work!

I’m just letting you know that Agora Pro does not work with J! 3.x. Agora Pro definitely does not work with PHP 7.0+. If it works for you that’s a surprise with J! 3.10.11 (and PHP 8.1) because J! 3.10 doesn’t work with PHP 8.1!

There are other alternatives that you could use (if you wanted) including converting your forum to something else. I understand the sentimental value (perhaps) attached to retaining forum posts dating back 15 years but ask yourself if they’re relevant or really worth keeping.

I’m sorry to be the bearer of sad news; I’m just giving you the facts. jVitals, the company behind Agora, closed their doors years ago … long before PHP 7.0 was released.

BTW, there’s a big difference between a website “working” and a website operating error-free.

Well this is where the site is now, although still no joy. still the same error. Would Agora stop it from updating past 3.4.8? As mentioned i have it running on my other site and all seems well with it. Just would be nice to get this site to at least get past 3.4.8. Apart from trying the Method C approach which seems to be unadvised i am really stuck.

"Method C" should only be attempted as a last resort! It is important to run the Michael Babker's script afterwards. This method is not officially supported by the J! project.

"Method C" should not be used as the first thing to do. It's the last thing you could try. It may "work" but it's not guaranteed to work.

You should also run the Database check in the backend.

Also, look for a file named error_log in your website's root folder. If you have such a file, look at the last dozen entries written to it; it's a text file that you can open with a text editor. This file may indicate you have other errors you were unaware of.

Looks like you have not defined a place to log errors. It's a setting (in your webhosting cPanel). Your cPanel may also have another place to look for reported errors.

Thanks for the update. I know that my previous warnings about simply overwriting the existing site filesystem with an "update package" may have appeared alarmist but it's important to point out that these "manual updates" are not without conditions.

It is very important to advise others, who may be tempted, that there is no officially supported method called a "manual update". People who may be tempted to overwrite the existing filesystem with the files extracted from a later version of J! should be warned that they're going out on their own if they do that. People who subscribe to manual updates—instead of using the Joomla! Update—may as well believe that witchcraft is superior to modern medicine.

During the course of J! 3.x there were a couple of database changes that occurred along the way. The first of these changes occurred with J! 3.6.5. The Joomla! Update component applies those database changes after replacing the existing core CMS files. If there is some unknown reason that the Joomla! Update component cannot be run, the database changes have to be made by another method; that's the point of Michael Babker's [post-installation] script. @xfsgpr's advice does not mention this important step! If that step is not run, the J! website is useless.

Importantly, you now need to update from J! 3.6.5 to J! 3.10.11: this is done in two more stages. After doing those things, I would advise changing from PHP 5.6 to PHP 7.4 (or perhaps PHP 8.0 but no higher). Good luck.

Again thanks for all your help the site is now currently on J! 3.10.11 and PHP 7.2. Will be taking to PHP 8.0 when I next come back to it.

As you say the manual route is last resort but it allowed me to continue the update. So happy with the upgrade from J! 2.5.48 all the way upto to J! 3.10.11
