Old database not being used

I've followed the instructions for for installing 3.1.1. I'm doing a new install from a 1.5.x version. I backed up my root directory and downloaded it, as well as the SQL databases. I would definitely want to retain my old articles, images and so on from my 1.5 version. I uploaded and installed 3.1.1, specifically citing my "joom1" database as the DB I wanted 3.1 to use, and things seemed to install just fine. Of course, after looking in the backend, I find none of my articles are there (or any other of my stuff). I'm very perplexed on why this happened, and would very much welcome help!

The 1.5 database tables are different and cannot be used wigh 3.1. They are probably in the database with another prefix. Migrate using jUpgrade ogr Spupgrade. See the migration procedure in the docs.
