Upgrade from 1.6.0 to latest version?
How can I upgrade from 1.6.0 to latest version of Joomla? Are there instructions available?
Thanks
EDIT: AFAIK I am not using any third party extensions, I only used what came in 1.6.0. I did replace the logo on the home page.

There never was a Joomla 1.6 version. The last version in the 1.5 series was 1.5.26 I believe.

I don't recall if this is the exact download link I used but my site is running Joomla 1.6dhuelsmann wrote:There never was a Joomla 1.6 version. The last version in the 1.5 series was 1.5.26 I believe.
Thanks for the link, I found that shortly before you replied. It looks like heavy lifting to me.dhuelsmann wrote:Migration guide https://docs.joomla.org/Joomla_1.5_to_3 ... _Migration

Re: Upgrade from 1.6.0 to latest version?
Joomla 1.6 is not 1.5. 1.6 was the first version leading to the 2.5 version. 1.6->1.7->2.5
Are you on 1.6.5 or 1.6.6? There is a bug in the updater of prior versions.
https://docs.joomla.org/Special:MyLangu ... 6.5_to_1.7
Do the updates in this order:
http://joomlacode.org/gf/download/frsre ... ackage.zip
http://joomlacode.org/gf/download/frsre ... ackage.zip
http://joomlacode.org/gf/download/frsre ... ackage.zip
http://joomlacode.org/gf/download/frsre ... ackage.zip
There are many updates to run when you got so far behind.
The 1.6 release was valid for 6 months from 2011-01-08

My bad. Thanks Per Yngve Berg. Those short-term releases just didn't hang around long enough for me to remember them.Per Yngve Berg wrote:1.6 was the first version leading to the 2.5 version.

@Per Yngve Berg
Thank you for your reply.
I am on 1.6.0 so I guess I must first upgrade from 1.6 to 1.6.6 before I can go any farther. I can’t find any instructions for this step (only information on migrating). How do I do this step?

Everything was fine until I installed Joomla_3.4.2-Stable-Update_Package.zipPer Yngve Berg wrote:Download Update Package and install with Extensions Installer.
The AdminCP looks wrong and home page shows this error:
Code: Select all
Table 'vuwsdcom_joomla.jos_contentitem_tag_map' doesn't exist SQL=SELECT `m`.`tag_id`,`t`.* FROM `jos_contentitem_tag_map` AS m INNER JOIN `jos_tags` AS t ON `m`.`tag_id` = `t`.`id` WHERE `m`.`type_alias` = 'com_content.article' AND `m`.`content_item_id` = 3 AND `t`.`published` = 1 AND t.access IN (1,1)

Today I deleted database and site files then restored them from backups. If I don't hear from you I will try again except when I get to 2.5.28 I will install 3.0. If that works I will go one version at a time until I reach the current version.Perses wrote:Everything was fine until I installed Joomla_3.4.2-Stable-Update_Package.zipPer Yngve Berg wrote:Download Update Package and install with Extensions Installer.

Re: Upgrade from 1.6.0 to latest version?
There are a lot of posts about 2.5->3.4
1) You have not disabled all 3. party plugins + Remember Me
2) The Max_Execution_Time is to short on the server.

The host says the server timeout is 60 seconds. They will start a ticket and increase it to 300 seconds.Per Yngve Berg wrote:There are a lot of posts about 2.5->3.4

As I said before I don’t have any 3rd part extensions, I never heard of Remember Me. I only used what came with 1.6.0. Is there some extensions built in that you want turned off?
The first time I tried to use extension manager to install Joomla_1.6.0_to_1.6.6-Stable-Patch_Package.zip it failed so I uploaded it and expanded it and that seemed to work. Does it matter if I do this with all packages or must I use extension manager to install. Note that the upgrade function does not work no matter what version of joomla I used. If the timeout is increased then maybe I won’t have to do it like this for Joomla_1.6.0_to_1.6.6-Stable-Patch_Package.zip.
After I restored my site to 1.6.0 this morning I discovered that there 111 infected files. If I get upgrades installed will that overwrite the infected files? I could scan again after that and delete any suspicious files that aren’t in the software packages. Assuming the number of remaining infected files is small. I did try overwriting and deleting 1.6.0 files and got half way through when the site went belly up. I assume I deleted the wrong file or failed to overwrite an infected file or maybe it’s not possible to have the remainder of the infected files still present and have the site work. It was a long day! All this started last October. My host sent me cryptic messages about having set some files to 000. Today they tell me I am responsible for cleaning an infection. I wish they had told me how many files were infected when this all started. Maybe I could have dealt with it then. I did’t realize what was wrong until today when cPanel File Manager silently failed after my third attempt to upload my backup. Eventually I scanned it myself and found the infection. Then they tell me to use FTP and that worked. After expanding the zip file the site was restored to it’s original state.

No, by upgrading you won't get rid of infected files. Most of the time malicious files are not directly Joomla's files being modified, but extra file inserted by attackers.
It is obvious your backup already contains infected files. You first have to take care if infected Joomla problem, and upgrade thereafter.
You are already getting help for the security part of your problem in the topic http://forum.joomla.org/posting.php?mod ... &p=3314366 , please continue discussion about the cleanup there.

Re: Upgrade from 1.6.0 to latest version?
This is only partly correct. The issue resolves itself if you use SP Upgrade to migrate/upgrade to Joomla 3.4.3 directly from Joomla 1.6/1.7 since SP upgrade requires you to make a fresh Joomla install so you only upgrade Joomla database tables and no files. I have so far very, very seldom seen an infected database and it is always files and/or folders that are being hacked (I am sure you agree here)Bernard T wrote:No, by upgrading you won't get rid of infected files.
So if Poster upgrades with SP-Upgrade he/she can 'relatively' easy get rid of this crap assuming the hosting environment is safe (which is not the least guaranteed based on posts). 3rd party extensions can be easy migrated with fresh installs and database transfers etc
Just some thoughts?

Re: Upgrade from 1.6.0 to latest version?
@all
Infection is resolved in this thread: Secure Joomla 1.6?
I still need answers to these questions:
AFAIK I have no third party plugins. How would I know if I do have them?
What is Remember Me and why did Per Yngve Berg talk about this?
Where would I find a thread that chronicles upgrading from 2.5 to 3.4? This is where I failed last time I tried.
EDIT: I have found Remember Me and unpublished it in Extension Manager on the Manage tab.
EDIT: I'm reading this thread that chronicles upgrading 2.5 to 3.4 Practical Guide Upgrade Joomla 2.5 to Joomla 3.x
