Upgrade from 3.5 -> 3.6.0 ends in update.finalise blank page & SQL err

When updating from 3.5 to 3.6.0 the process ends in a blank page with the following URL:

...../administrator/index.php?option=com_joomlaupdate&task=update.finalise

As the documentation/forum-posts suggest i return to the administrator, then:

• fix the database.
• clear the extension update cache
• press: find updates => nothing
• go to the update sites and rebuild => SQL error:

  Code: Select all

  SELECT extension_id FROM #__update_sites_extensions WHERE

• the discovery process finds the Joomla installer modules (folder, upload, url), but installing and enabling these does not solve the issue.

I've run this upgrade a few times now, even manually, but am at a loss here. I did notice that 'update sites' list is noticeably shorter after the upgrade (only 4 remaining: core, extensions dir and 2 translations).


Anyone with some suggestions?

Always is good advice have copy of originally files, when the update is wrong, you have to debug files and folders, copy folder from the backup and see the problem persist, (file by file or folder to folder) after done this you have to locate the file is causing problem.

Note: Remember always test your website with private navigation or browsing

I have a copy/backup, that's how i ran the upgrade process several times (restore and re-try) in a few different ways.

I do not grasp the debug process your suggesting (restore files from my backup over the failed upgrade one's?), but i'm a bit reluctant to restore thousands of files one-by-one manually.

Go to extension manager and clear cache and reload and use ->Discover. You will see com_joomlaupdate listed. Update that component and you can run the upgrade smoothly. If you cannot find it you can download and install it as normal extension https://github.com/joomla/joomla-cms/re ... -3.6.1.zip

Thanx for your reply.

I've done that (read the docs and your tips in other related threads) but the update of that component will not show up. Tried to manually install the component from your link on my current test-install-gone-bad, but get the same SQL error.

Will now restore a test install and:

• Upgrade to from J!3.5.1 to 3.6.0
• Fix database
• Go to: Extensions > Manage > Discover
• Clear Cache and run Discover / this only found the 3 joomla installer components (from URL,upload,folder) uptil now
• Install the update component if it's discovered, otherwise download and install it manually

Will report back after.

Alas, this did not work either.

• Ran the upgrade
• fixed the db
• cleared the cache and checked if there where extension updates > nope
• did not go to the update sites and try to rebuild because in all my previous tests it got me the SQL error and and incomplete sites list
• went to install the com_joomlaupdate manually, but could not, got a warning: "No installation plugin has been enabled. At least one must be enabled to be able to use the installer. Go to the Plugin Manager to enable the plugins."
• as with the previous test, went to: Extensions > Manage > Discover
• cleared the cache and ran "Discover", this found the 3 joomla installer components (from URL,upload,folder), installed them and enabled them
• Now going to Extensions > manage > install, there's no more warning about the plugins and i can manually install the com_joomlaupdate component > installed without problem
• go to Extensions > manage > update sites > a list of approx 20 sites (see one or two doubles - iirc for translations)
• run the "Discover" > and the same SQL Error again and after that only a list of 6 (all joomla) site left

There's not much history to this site (started out as joomla 3.4.3) an not many extensions that could be in the way (and all quite reputable).


I'm at a lost here. I don't think i'm doing much out of the ordinary.

It is evident you don't understand the process properly! You need to do the right things in the right order!

1- Restore your J351 environment.
2- Update to J360, when that fails repair your infrastructure so it doesn't fail and start again at step 1.
3- Update Joomla Update to 361, when the update doesn't show: clean cache and find updates
4- Update to J362

Don't do anything else, report here when something stops you from following the above procedure.

Regarding the steps (number #3) just to clarify: Update 'com_joomlaupdate' to the latest version (not 'Joomla Update')

#3 uses Joomla! Update because that is name of com_joomlaupdate mentioned in both the Components menu and Extensions->Manage->Update. Just noticed I forgot the ! in the name.

Then again, when you don't know you should use Joomla! Update to update, consider you a lost cause.
