Just want to translate one article

Post by dattard » Thu Jul 07, 2016 10:06 am

Hi guys,

I am trying to do some testing with multi-language. I've got an article in English which I have translated to Spanish. My goal is to be able to have this article

1. Shown under a specific category of "Tutorials" (so that there is a link to it)
2. Not require any language switches, buttons or whatever. Most of my content comes from search engines, so I just want to get this article indexed

I've added a language, added the translated content and set the article as Spanish. But my article is nowhere to be found. I'm not too sure how I can access it?

I followed most of this article (http://www.rockettheme.com/docs/joomla/ ... al_site.md), but at the point where it comes to creating a language switcher and specific menus for languages I stopped, since I don't need this.

Can you help?

David

Based on this requirement, I would suggest not enabling the multilingual site features. There is no need to install the Spanish language and to create the content language for Spanish.

The article could be in Spanish, however, treat it as just another article - Do not assign any language to this article. If you use the Title in Spanish, appropriate Alias would be created. After this, you can create a link this article. If need be, you could create a hidden menu item for this article to make the link more readable.

Hope this helps.

What about creating the necessary tags necessary for SEO such as

<link rel="alternate" href="http://example.com/en" hreflang="es-ES" />

This can be done by using a 3rd party plugin.
You can test http://extensions.joomla.org/extension/jostag on the JED

Thanks for that, I already saw that suggestion, but would have wanted to avoid going down the road of having another plugin on my site. I try to keep them to a minimum. Already got sh404SEF, so I would have thought it would probably suffice to use that?

Or something native to the core? What about the multilingual features native to Joomla, can't I do that with those? Or would that involve having to create the language switcher, different language menus etc etc?

Multilingual feature in Joomla needs Joomla to be set as a full multilingual site (switcher, languagefilter, language packs, etc.), which you say yourself above you don't want to do.

If it is for an article or 2, use the plugin. It's free and will do no harm to your site.

Ok, thanks, I'll give it a shot and come back if I don't manage to do that.

Cheers!
