how to change the permalink for an article...

Post by electricJedi » Mon Sep 01, 2014 3:35 am

it seems like all the half way decent seo plugins are PAID plugins with joomla
just to get a sitemap or do basic stuff that is very easy with wordpress

I just want to set my url for an article
set my own permalink
can I do that without buying an seo plugin?

I thought joomla 3.x was going to include all this seo stuff built in stock?

next week I'll probably just break down and buy joomSEF or ACEseo or sh404sef
which is the best paid SEO plugin for joomla?

damn I thought joomla 3.x we wouldn't even need an seo plugin
I guess I'll have to break down and buy one of those 3 most likely

but I should be able to set a permalink for an article to what I want
without buying any plugins
I really thought Joomla 3.x could do this stock

hopeful...

You don't need an SEO extension. Just create a menu item and make the alias whatever you want as the permalink.

thanks jackrabbit, but this article is not a menu item.

Post by electricJedi » Mon Sep 01, 2014 3:32 pm

this article is not a menu item unfortunately

the alias is set to what I want
but joomla is adding:

25-

right before the alias I want

so I just want to remove 25-
from the url

hope this is possible without having to buy a plugin

Do not be caught up in excessive SEO fad. Google does no penalize for digits in an already SEF written url. Many very highly ranked sites use dates in the url as
2014/08/30/the-best-seo-system-in-town

Removing the article ID will not increase your score in any miniscule way

of course removing 3 digits will be a miniscule benefit it's true
but why is this so difficult with joomla?

I like to know how to do things on my site and I like to have some control
and not simply accept weird urls because it's joomla
and everything is more difficult than wordpress.

Why do you use Joomla if it is difficult? Wouldn't be best to stick with what works best for you?

I use many cms systems because
I can't usually tell clients to switch to a different cms
I have to deal with it. I love joomla, don't get me wrong
I'm just a little disappointed that this basic seo stuff isn't built in yet

I just can't believe there's no way to set a permalink in joomla 3.x
wasn't this version supposed to have all this seo stuff built in now??

There are many asking that question!

I see there has not been any activity in this thread in a long time and I thought I could reuse it instead of creating a new thread.

Is there any easy way to change the permalinks in Joomla?
I currently have Joomla 3.7.2 version installed.

The answer is already given.

Create a menu item.

Okay, so I need to create a menu list for every post I create to control the permalink. Then this answers parts of my question. I still want to control the rest of the url.

In Joomla, if I create a menu item the url becomes:
https://www.mydomain.com/index.php/mypost

I would like to control the url permalink to only:
https://www.mydomain.com/mypost

Can I remove the index.php in the settings somehow?

Thanks Per Yngve for the link.

I was hoping that it was possible to change it without editing the htaccess, but guess I have to get my hand dirty ;-)

There were instructions for how to do this by editing router.php and this has worked for me for quite a while (despite the tedium of redoing it every update), but it looks like router.php has changed drastically since then.

Can anyone explain how you can still achieve this? All I want is links that don’t depend on arbitrary article ids.

There will be a new router in 3.8/4.0

Per Yngve, what does it mean that there will be a new router?
Does Seanos suggestion work until there is a new update of the "router"?
