How to recover from structure change

Post by masoesa » Sat Sep 20, 2014 3:53 am

Hello,

Although the sef component I was using increased traffic I removed it because of the irregularities it caused. Managing sef was like another day job.

Now of course all the links changed, the site basically has a complete new structure. My question is what is the quickest way to recover. My traffic already went 80% down in 2 days so now I:

1) Created and submitted a new sitemap (but there is a problem because only 49 links are indexed)
2) Redirecting links using the redirect component.

Is there anything I can do?

Managing sef was like another day job. First it was the shop, it was hard to create steady links to the shop, then it was cache, now mods are not showing up. There was always something to the point that it became unmanageable or I had to hire someone just for that.

Now the site is much much faster, the template works, management overall is much more doable.

Have you set the Redirect Component to collect unknown urls?

If the changes can be resolved with a rule (regexp), you can use .htaccess.

I want to use .htaccess but I don't know regexp. Can you tell me more or send me a link where I can find more info?

I used this. Does it work?

Redirect 301 /going-locs http://going-natural.com/natural-hairstyles/going-locs/
