Keywords for category not showing
The keywords (metadata) set in category are not showing in the html? If I set them in the menu-item, they show up. Using Protostar.
Bug?

Re: Keywords for category not showing
Not showing on the html of what kind of page(s)?
What version of 3.x?
Any extensions affecting metadata?
Do other metadata fields output properly, on those same pages, when filled in category details and blank in menu items?
Edits:
Tried copying the menu item, giving it special access, and using a different template? (aka, is it just protostar?)
Do you have a template override that might be broken?

Re: Keywords for category not showing
On category blog pages and its both keywords and description. Tried it with beez3 and same results. If I add meta data in the menu-item they show up in category blog. If I add meta-data in the category manager (and no meta in the menu-item) the default meta data for the site are shown in the category blog. Thus the meta-data entered in the category-manager seem to have no effect.
I tried it on two different sites & should be no overrides or metadata extensions.
Does meta-data entered in category manager work for you?

Re: Keywords for category not showing
Yes, although the site I tested with is 3.1; I somehow un-readied my home server for 3.3 and haven't had time to figure out what happened; so 3.1 is the most recent I can test on at the moment. But, yes, keywords entered into the category editor in Category Manager, appeared in the html/head/meta section for a blog menu entry.

Re: Keywords for category not showing
I am not getting keywords nor description from the category manager. But if I enter them in the menu item they show up.
This has to be a problem with this instance of Joomla. Any idea about the problem and solution is greatly appreciated!.

No direct ideas about the problem, but I haven't asked you for FPA yet: please use Forum Post Assistant on your site and post its output directly into a response here. Please let it show server config and extensions. Hopefully it'll help me or someone else see a problem.

Re: Keywords for category not showing
Thanks, I think I can do that. But just remembered that I see the same thing (no category meta-data) on two different sites that are on different hosts.

Re: Keywords for category not showing
There's a slim chance this is being caused by a template doing things wrong. In the template's main index.php file there is supposed to be this line somewhere between <head> and </head>:
If the template coder didn't know that and used direct API calls instead, they could get the logic wrong or omit the category pull entirely.
If that code above appears correct in your template and isn't wrapped in a conditional PHP block, it should work... if you're seeing calls to JDocument::getMetaData() or other such things instead, that's ...odd.
PS: Don't get so distracted by this that you forget FPA
Code: Select all
<jdoc:include type="head" />

Re: Keywords for category not showing
With so much information hidden, and what little it does show me says your site isn't even configured, I can't really get anything out of this. Take a look at the output with privacy turned off, it really doesn't reveal much, and consider posting again with all the info.

Re: Keywords for category not showing
Thanks for taking a look, I'll see if I can post more info. I tried the Joomla-demo and am pretty sure it does not display keywords from categories either. Since its reset every ten minutes one has to be quick. But got keywords and description when adding a menu item (user menu) but nothing when adding them in the category manager.

Re: Keywords for category not showing
- - login to the backend of the joomla demo
- Add a category, and write something in Meta Description and Meta Keywords
- Add a menu item (category blog) to the user-menu pointing to the category just added
- Log in to the frontend and click on the menu item just added in the user-menu
- Check source for Meta Description and Meta Keywords
- Add Meta Description and Meta Keywords to the menu item

Re: Keywords for category not showing
Appears to be related, yes.
However it's a coin toss about whether it's fixed by next update - they're in a freeze waiting to push out a maintenance release in the coming week and this bug only has one testing confirmation round completed. Nobody has submitted code to fix it yet. There is a bug fixing party in the works however, just not sure on timing.

Re: Keywords for category not showing
This is not fixed by the looks of it.
I have spent weeks trying to migrate J1.5 and J2.5 systems to J3.3 as it was released as a stable release.
It should not be recommended as the latest stable release.
I now find that this critical flaw in SEO is across all systems.
I have a J3.24 using protostar template the issue is there with that Joomla version as well.
So I am now looking at testing a 3.1 version and seeing how I can revert all systems to a 3.1 version that works.
I feel a fool for only just finding this out as I cannot revert back to J3.1 without being sure there are no database upgrades between J3.1 and J3.3.
If there were non I could delete all files except configuration.php and altered root or template files and extract and dump a 3.1 version onto the server.
It looks like weeks of work may be up in smoke.
This J3.3 version needs to be withdrawn until this exceptionally important SEO bug is resolved.

To Joomla Admin — Is this fixed ?
and if not When?
A broken SEO is unacceptable, should be top priority.

Re: Keywords for category not showing
Its working for me and the status at Joomlacode is "Fixed in SVN/GitHub". But my problem was with "normal" content. If I am not mistaken they are working on removing the weblinks component, so maybe your problem is related to that?

Re: Keywords for category not showing
I updated from 2.5.24 to 3.3 and none of the com_content metadata is showing from categories in either 3.2 or 3.3, where it is showing from categories, as it should, in 2.5.24.
As for the disposal of weblinks , which when used properly can get good SERP and clickthrough. It does not surprise me this may get removed. If Joomla can strip down the component function they can help promote those 3rd party paid extensions and have less responsibility themselves, (not that they accept any anyway).

Re: Keywords for category not showing
I migrated a site from an earlier 3+ version to 3.3.6 recently. The category meta data that was entered in Category Manager shows up in the <head> section just fine. This was meta data that was there before the upgrade. I found a category that did not have meta data - just added it and it shows up just fine.
I am running 3.3.6 with a customized Protostar template on this site. This meta data is showing up on a Category List. It also worked just fine with a Category Blog. This meta desc in question is appearing on the actual blog page or list page but not with the individual articles.
