Best free Joomla 3.0 templates

Can anyone recommend a good free Joomla 3.0 template? This will be for a brand new site, so ideally the template is lightweight, fast and designed for Joomla 3.0 and looks great on mobile, tablets and desktops.

Thanks in advance!

Bonus points if anyone knows of one that supports eCommerce, or something like a job site, where users can post services requested and a price they are willing to pay, and other users can bid on those projects. The site would facilitate the transaction and take a small fee (like eBay).

Cheers!

The Gantry Framework from RocketTheme is free and a default template is available too:

http://gantry-framework.org/download
http://demo.gantry-framework.org

Gantry has been responsive for a while and works really well whether it's on a desktop, tablet or mobile.

Do all free templates have the "designed by" tags at the bottom? I can't seem to find one that doesn't. I've bought a template for my company's site, but for some other sites I wanna play around with and work on, I'd rather use a free template, but I can't find one with a copyright at the bottom that you can't remove.

I wanted to follow here as I have done a lot of research. This looks like a really great option for those going this direction:

I have no prior Joomla experience, and I just had a great experience designing my first website with Gavick Pro's Meet Gavern template that is fully responsive as well - http://www.gavick.com/download/joomla-3 ... avern.html

If you would like to avoid a headache. Avoid Gavick Pro. The templates look real sleek and nice, but are broken garbage bags.

Just go through some of the template forum posts if you don't believe me.

I don't get any of these frameworks, why use Joomla at all if you then use proprietry software on top of it? Thats like buying a Raspberry Pi and installing Windows on it.

All of these frameworks are bloated and slow, full of junk code and unnecessary feature-bloat - it's just 1001 more things that can and do go wrong. They add a completely unnecessary steeper curve to learning Joomla too. You'd be better off taking a good quality html theme and hiring somebody to convert it to a Joomla template using native Joomla code and good templating practices for you - many a freelancer will do so for around $200.

If you are going to get into bed with what is still essentially a commercial application (free though they are they are still owned and can be discontinued at any time) bear in mind that they can change the licensing whenever they like and they are designed to promote the brand of their themes and establish their theming format as the dominant one. And, guess what will happen when they rule the market for theming protocol? They'll charge for the framework.

Ironically, many of the free themes out there are much better since they tend not to be built on "Whizzbandwhallop Framework Version 397" and just employ proven, robust NATIVE Joomla code rather than a whole application layer that does God knows what.

In my humble opinion not enough Joomla template designers design without a framework - soon as I see the words "Gavern, warp, wright, T3 etc etc" I hit the back button

hi glynster! thank you for you.

NOT : Non+ -LESS CSS vs. LESS CSS
LESS is a dynamic stylesheet language designed by Alexis Sellier and has recently been integrated into Joomla 3.0. The development of a template has significantly changed by the use of LESS. All the website templates and backend will include /less directory and template.less files. Those two are meant for importing both Bootstrap and JUI (less files and media/jui/less files). That enables the template designers to define which file should be applied to their template, and which one will be imported to the LESS JUI.

Without Less, Joomla 2.5 uses CSS to style

vs. Less in Joomla 3.0

I'm confused - Joomla doesnt use LESS in a live capacity. LESS files are included but are intended to be compiled into CSS and not provide live styling on a website. You can, technically, with a Javascript compiler called less.js, compile LESS files into css "on the fly", but it's slow and adds a LOT of browser overhead - it is intended for development and not a live site as it would be too slow and crash your server if you had any sizable traffic. Either way, as i understood it, LESS files are included for faster easier offline development of new CSS themes which are then uploaded. Please correct me if I am wrong.

I also want to recommend the Wright template that pfergi42 first mentioned in this thread. I have been using this template for one of my Joomla powered websites and it works very well. If you want a nice clean responsive template then Wright is the way to go ;)

You are not wrong Glynster, you have a perfect grasp of the realities and I agree with your assessment of frameworks 100% (my own excepted of course, as it's a Sass framework but a standalone template in the Joomla sense).

If it's free, it's going on the list too ;) Bias is good when you need to get to know about things :) Updated!

Nice and clean by the way: I like it. I'll give it a shot once I actually manage to migrate to J3...
