Are random template (?) styles possible?

I have been asked to look at the possibility of producing a magazine-style site.
Thinking through concepts, I don't want the entire site to use the same style - which is easy enough to implement with different templates - but what would also be quite "interesting" would be able to have multiple styles imposed on articles within a category-blog layout.
I was thinking that (say) 10 or 12 different styles (not radically different so as they looked consistent) would be a realistic maximum.
Is this even possible??

One can "assign" templates, and template styles to menu items.
Some templates may support this better than others.

Yes I know this can be done and I have done it in the past, but I wondered if it was possible to apply different styles to individual articles within a category-blog layout.

If I had that requirement, I would try to solve it with Regular Labs "Content Templater."
