My site has been hacked

Post by Jimson » Wed May 25, 2016 5:16 pm

Please excuse my English and complete Joomla ignorance (great beginning :)

About two years ago I started my online store (сurrent Joomla version is 3.3.6)
Of course, it was created by other people. I'm a regular user, not a programmer or web designer, but during this time the site worked fine.

Today one of my customers told me that when he searched in Google and Yandex #my_site_name it shows links to erotic materials or something like that.

I've contacted my host tech support and they confirmed that my site was hacked. According to them, now everything is OK, the malicious code has been removed but I have to update Joomla.

Version 3.5.1 is available. Is it safe to update it myself ? What is a prefered way of instal, direct or via FTP ?

You should be updating all the time, because the newest version is all the time the safest one. However, there's a reason to check your old extensions and use some security extensions, plus... maybe, you can be interested in the fact that most of hacked websites are hacked via SFTP. This info can be usable, if you've got your own server, or VPS.
Possibly, there' s reasonable to check your own computer as well yet before you'll try to log in to your websites.
