"best practice" for multilingual sites

Post by ruiLouis » Sat Sep 13, 2014 3:23 am

Hi,

I have questions regarding "best practice" for multilingual sites.

Here are the main information:
* The original language is Japanese.

* I checked almost all the available online translator and none of them is able to output correct translation when it's Japanese -> some other languages.

Nevertheless,

* I noticed that translations from English to other languages are quite understandable, especially when it comes to European languages and Chinese.

So I decided I would have my site translated completely in English AND THEN, have this version automatically

translated to some other languages.

I would like to use the Google translation engine, but how should I do to keep it smooth and easy to admin?

My website is on
http://www.domain.com

I'd like to have the translated pages showing totally independently so that the content doesn't jam the Japanese content in Search result, because Japanese tend to fly away when they see alphabet results (because they assume they won't understand it).

So I thought about

http://www.domain.com
http://www.domain.com/en/ <- the manually translated English version

then

http://www.domain.com/sp/ <- the automatically translated Spanish version
http://www.domain.com/fr/ <- the automatically translated French version

and so on.

What do you think about it? Would there be a better way to do it? How do I get to have each site translated with a different index root? It will take me lots of time, so I really want to make the best of it :D

Sorry for all those questions, I hope I made my problematic clear enough so that it might help others in the future.

Regards and thanks for reading,
Louis
