Centrora Security?

Post by oakmarklondon » Sun Aug 17, 2014 10:10 am

Hi,

Do you have any experience with Centrora? I just found a new security extention but it seems to be very new without any comments. Is it worth trying?

Haven't tried it, but a Joomla Extension that needs "WordPress 3.5 or above"?

I took a very fast peek.

Basically it is a "OSE Firewall" repacked (disclosed in JED listing), with some minor changes. Even the table names weren't changed at all. "Antivirus DB" update brings only 19 malware patterns, and "firewall DB" won't update at all on my test machine, waits for "subscription status" check. So I'd say it's not usable a lot at this stage.

Since I cannot find OSE Firewall on the OSE website, or any data where that extension disappeared, and WP version of OSE firewall redirects to Centrora too, my guess is that this extension got sold or overtaken by Centrora. But if any of that happened, a clear notification would be more than welcome. Also the Centrora website is very scarce about what team is behind it, so - let's wait to see what will this extension develop into.

Looks like it should work on both Joomla and Wordpress.
But after a code review of the plugin and some other files I decided to not even test it.

OSE and Centrora are the same people - you can tell that as the posts on the site are by the same person.

That's what I thought at first look, but since OSE website says the company is based in Singapore (moved from UK), and Centrora states company in Australia, so I'm not so sure. No personal names anywhere. A bit more honest disclosure of the relations and people behind a security related extensions would make it more trustworthy with whom users are dealing with... just my 2 cents.

Just take care that your server software is well setup with high end security tools/suites (here for sure Bernard and I agree ;-) ) and than imho you do not need any of these so called security crap (Akeeba Admin Tools though is very useful in a lot of Joomla stuff) like Firewall extensions (always giving headaches and blocking wrong people out) IP-blockers and more of that 'just using the fear' useless extensions...my 2 cts
