Clicking 'Update Joomla' hangs, then loads homepage [3.10.12 -> 4.4.2] Topic is solved

I'm having issues attempting to upgrade my production site; I've already successfully upgraded a complete clone of the site and repeated those exact steps on production, however when I click on Update Joomla from the pre-check screen the page hangs with a loading icon in the tab for a long time, maybe 10-15 minutes, then bounces to the site homepage without having updated the Joomla version to 4.4.2.

I'm not sure where I might find a relevant log that explains what is happening, but there's no error message or any kind of information given at all. For reference I've gone through the entire migration checklist (as stated I've also completed an upgrade to a clone of this site beforehand) and I've practically disabled or updated every single extension installed and uninstalled the rest.

TLDR; I need help finding a log that explains why my site didn't upgrade to Joomla 4.4.2 from 3.10.12

I just noticed on the precheck page something that could be contributing to the long hang rather than resolving the update page and THEN erroring - for a number of items listed as 'Not possible to check the compatibility of these plugins' there is a status beside them Update Server error

Additionally the generic string at the top of the precheck section reads 'The request to the update server either timed out or returned an error.'

Perhaps I can try manually installing from the ZIP - if I do so is there much risk of write errors if I leave the default 'Write files directly'? Or is that a sin?

You have an great deal of 3rd party extensions and quite possibly some are not J4 compatible, you will have to check each manually to be sure. Yes your php settings will influence your updating.

First when an update fails it often creates a mismatch of files and sometimes database. So deleting the files and database then replacing with a backup is normally how to recover.

However as you already successfully updated on a production site you can recover by using that (after deleting the site files and deleting the database). If you use Akeeba to backup the successfully updated site you can use the backup to install on the server.

The installer in the jpa backup is verbose so if it doesn't install it will most likely tell you why.

Overwriting Joomla files with ones of a different version will break a site.

I'm going to go ahead with a manual install attempt as I have now updated those PHP values to match the recommended values provided by gws.

The 3rd party plugins all have update paths, I've already completed a full run of this process with a clone site in a staging area without issue and I had no choice but to leave some plugins not updated until after the Joomla update; it simply wouldn't accept update files for them until I was in J4 and it didnt cause any issues as I disabled all 3rd party plugins before update.
