For all here who are facing similar issues do the following.....

Download a full version of Joomla 2.5.4 and extract locally. Login to your site with ftp. Upload all folders and files (except for "installation"!) with ftp and make sure to overwrite existing ones.

The reason most of the posted related issues are happening is caused by upload and/or extracting errors on the servers you are running your system. I know it does not help you(!) but we upgraded over the past 2 days over 400 websites to Joomla 2.5.4 and we have not seen any of the admin-login issues as described here.

So without having a clear insight of your particular site and system environment it is hard to state why something went nuts. Please do not send me all kinds of messages and/or access details since I will not check any site 1:1 unless a contract is in place. I cannot do that towards our paying customers (just an explanation and no further comments requested nor given)

oh and uhhh.... Do not try to shoot the messenger?

Very sorry, but feel you are the one lacking courtesy, when you more or less indicate to another member (not me) that there is not a problem, when this thread is full of members complaining about the admin problem, I can only suggest that if you have failed to see (or read and understand) any of the previous posts including mine, then the only explanation can be that you have a lacking of the English language? if that is lacking in courtesy as you put it, then sorry but, better to say things as they are than beat about the bush. As for requesting help, may I point out it was not one of us who has messed things up for others, if you have made a mistake then be the gentleman and own up to it and correct the mistake, not suggest there was not a problem in the first place......or am I missing something.

For those of you with blank backend administrators, have a look at viewtopic.php?f=624&t=707494#p2782469

Confirm the symptoms first, then apply the fix.

As this thread is a discussion for this release, I believe that Joomla should release 2.5.5 very soon so it can include this fix. A quick look around the forums shows a fair number of users affected by this, and that is only the ones that have posted. There is a lot of good work gone into this release and this bug is just spoiling the good work for users affected.

I would like to report a problem with a multi language site and 2.5.4 upgrade.

I have 3 languages on my site. Upgrade from 2.5.3 to 2.5.4 has changed the behavior when I click on "home" menu in each language.

The 3 languages I have:
Japanese (site's default)
English
Thai

Search engine friendly URLs is set to "yes".

After the upgrade from 2.5.3 to 2.5.4, clicking on "home" menu always takes me to the Japanese default page regardless of the site's language I might be in.

With 2.5.3, I did not observe this behavior; when I was in English mode and click on "home", then I was taken to the default English page, and the default Thai page if I am in the Thai mode.

System Information
Database Version 5.5.20-log
Database Collation utf8_general_ci
PHP Version 5.3.10
Web Server Apache/2.2.21 (Win64) PHP/5.3.10
WebServer to PHP Interface apache2handler
Joomla! Version Joomla! 2.5.4 Stable [ Ember ] 2-April-2012 14:00 GMT

Thank you
toshi

I am about to try to update using the advice given by leolam in the post at the top of this page starting:

Quote:

Problem is I have used the Beez_20 template like many others do and edited the template quite a lot. I have also added a new module position and edited the some position details. So if I follow the instructions above will I not loose all of my edits if i overwrite the php and xml files?

You should alway make a copy of the template (with a new name) before you make any modifications. Otherwise any Joomla update may break your template.

Yes I know but when I asked many questions on the Forum relating to creating my own "look" I was encouraged to use and edit the beez_20 template as it was relatively easy to edit, which indeed it was but not one single soul suggested that I copy the template and then rename it. I did in fact ask a question about copying the template but was told that the Copy option only copied for a new style of the existing template. In version 1.7 it was no longer possible to copy a template so what does a complete newbie do, accept this or argue with the experts?

Just to clarify, you can't copy the Template trough the UI, you'd do that trough FTP.

Yes I know that now but when I started it was never mentioned. In any case I like many others would need guidance in copying the template and the only Joomla documentation on this is over 4 years old, is for the Milky Way template that most never see now and most of the info is irrelevant!

Hi Mitchell,
if you delete the Beez20 Template folder before you ftp the folders and files to your server you keep your own changed Beez20 template.
Another advise: Copy the Beez20 template folder with your changed Beez20 template to your own computer. This is your backup copy whenever your Beez20 template on the server is overwritten by an update.

Thanks for that but have to say I tried that at the beginning to no avail. It just seems odd that a new update is brought out to cover "serious security issues" in the previous version but it has caused not end of problems. I think this will discourage people from starting with Joomla in the first place (That's IMHO of course!)

The issues caused in updating are mostly because of sever setup and/or user error. In your case it was because you edited a standard Joomla Template instead of copying and renaming it. (as can be seen in your thread about that viewtopic.php?f=615&t=709727&p=2787626#p2787599 your site worked after the Template was copied and renamed correctly).
Also there is a problem with your server setup and your .htaccess file was not a Joomla one.

My site runs on an inexpensive shared hosting package and I have only had one problem with and update. That was when the update tried to create a temporary database table. And I had the database user permissions set to prevent that.(creating the user myself rather than having it auto created by the Host sorted that). And it was several updates back)

There is a problem with f_url not being on in some servers but placing a php.ini file (setting it on) in the /administration folder sorts that. The new 'Joomla! Updater' in the Components menu fixes that issue of updating Joomla on servers setup that way. Although it does show a warning because the module updates still need it on to update but Joomla doesn't.

Looking through the Posts about errors many are due to 3rd party 'framework' Templates. Many users seem to like the 'glitter' of those Templates while others consider them as 're inventing the wheel' because the same effects can be obtained without them. However as many users find using the 3rd party 'framework' Templates easier than configuring Joomla then they are used a lot. But using them on a site can cause problems and conflicts when updating.

All in all (IMHO) the 2.5.4 update works well.

I have a problem after updating from 2.5.3 to 2.5.4.

Everything worked fine, but now I tryed to change some settings on one of my menu items. Then suddenly URL of my menu item changed!

Like this:

Before: mysite.com/example1/example2

NOW: mysite/example1/Joomla! Update/example2

Why "Joomla! Update" is now inserted in my URL? And the bigger problem is that the link is not right now and can't change it (it shows me error 404).

Other menu items are ok for now, because I didn't open settings in the backend...

Please help , I really don't know what to do now... :(

EDIT: on that page I have google custom search. Tryed to create another menu with g custom search and "Joomla! Update!" inserted into my url again!

Sometimes it is possible to misinterpret what is said and sometimes Leo is a little quick with his Posts. But that is because he spends many hours helping this community.

There is a difference between not beating about the bush and being outright rude. And that line is more easily crossed by a new visitor. If you were a new visitor to a some club I doubt very much if you would speak to someome like that. But if you did then there would most likely be severe reprisals. As it is being rude on the other side of a computer screen it's very easy for you to be 'brave'.

There is another issue that effects updates, it is rare because not may configure the ACL in a non standard way. viewtopic.php?f=625&t=691030&p=2793967#p2793191 explains the fix. And if you don't have a backup then that thread posts has a link to the patch.

On one of my sites, upgraded to 2.5.4 from 2.5.3, there is no menu for Joomla Update, although there is a quick icon in the admin start page which leads to the appropriate page when clicked, but the Components menu is actually missing...

Any solution?

Nailed it! That fixed it...

Weird part is though, the site was built on J2.5, not upgraded from J1.6/J1.7...If I understood the problem description correctly, it should have been happening to upgraded/migrated joomla versions...
Never had the error showed there either...but still had the problem...

Cheers

com_joomlaupdate was added in 2.5.4. The updater in the Extension manager is com_installer. The new Component com_joomlaupdate is basically the Admintools update from Akeeba.

Another issue I am having is that if I attach images in the articles using the "Images and Links" field, these are not shown in the article, either for blog/introtext or fulltext....

Anyone else having this same problem?

Notice the // (double forward slash) ?

You have some thing configured incorrectly on your server. Where have altered any paths ? Or you have set rewrite in Global config but not edited the .htaccess correctly ?
