Try to go first to Extensions Manager => Database and click on the Fix button.
Then go to Extensions Manager =>Discover and click on Purge cache and then Discover.
Install what needs to be installed.
Then go to Extensions Manager => Update and click on Purge cache then Find Update

Then go to Components => Joomla! Update.

I tried that and i got stucked already on first step, Database. I got message:
Database schema version (2.5.3-2012-03-13) does not match CMS version (2.5.4).

Other info was:

Database schema version (in #__schemas): 2.5.3-2012-03-13.
Update version (in #__extensions): 2.5.4.
Database driver: mysql.
62 database changes were checked successfully.
18 database changes did not alter table structure and were skipped.

Have you clicked on the Fix toolbar button?

Update to my June 23 post in this thread: After repeatedly seeing the "Joomla is up-to-date" message while it was still running 2.5.4 (but other sites were running 2.5.6), and not being able to do a click update because it insisted that 2.5.4 was the latest version, I signed in today and the control panel advised me that it needed to update to 2.5.6. Click, click, and everything is now up-to-date. No idea why it wouldn't work previously, but glad that it finally allowed the update.

Teresa your issue is most likely caused by the caching that now expired. If you would have purged your cache in your extension manager you might have received the upgrade message earlier. You can review some instructions I posted here in case you need it for a future event or someone else goes through the same motions

Looks like the feed display caching problem is still not resolved on this release. Still blank news feed pages generated. See this discussion:

Hi

I am in the process of upgrading to 2.5 from 1.5

i used
Code:
index.php?option=com_content&view=article&Itemid=
a lot in my sites but notice that this will no longer work in 2.5.

It is a pity as
Code:
index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=
the only option in 2.5, does not display the modules for that article page, only those that are set with all.

Any chance of a code update to include the former linking arrangment?

cheers

Hi,
Congratulation Joomla team and community when released Joomla 2.5.6.
I have installed Joomla 2.5.6 but there only have MySQL and MYsqli database. There is no PostgreSQL database.

It's true Joomla 2.5.6 do not support PostgreSQL Database?
Which Joomla version that can support PostgreSQL Database?

No, there's no PostgreSQL support at the moment...
Technical requirements, see: http://www.joomla.org/technical-requirements.html

Joomla 2.5 can run on MSSQL too, but as many 3rd party extensions use hardcoded MySQL in their code, I would not recommend to use MSSQL at the moment.
