I hoped for optimization improvements in this release, but I couldn't see any (please correct me if I'm wrong).

A scary feature that was added was the random ordering in the category blog - the " ORDER BY RAND()" MySQL function is one of the heaviest MySQL functions out there, and I'm sure that it'll cause problems on large websites regardless of what storage engine is used (MyISAM, InnoDB, etc...). It is probably usable on small websites with less than 1000 articles, but it will become a main cause of performance issues on large websites.

I think that the Joomla development team must be aware that Joomla is not the same Joomla that it was a decade ago, and it is now used by gigantic websites for very large companies (that have to modify the Joomla core for their websites to work). I think the focus on the next version of Joomla should be optimization, and not additional features.

Rand is a completely optional parameter that is not used by default. Sure it's heavy - but actually the majority of Joomla sites aren't massive - and this has (surprisingly for me anyhow) been a largely requested feature for a while now....

Hi,
There is something I can't understand after using Joomla for 10 years (french agency) : why adding a very nice drag'n drop, insert module, insert article function to TinyMCE when it's still impossible to easyli insert a link to a PDF file without less than 10 clics ? Everybody use JCE or Ark for example because of this lack !

At our agency we have try all the new function this morning and... come back to JCE because we can't explain our 2016 client they have to make a lot of manipulation for adding a simple link to a PDF hen they have to simple drag'n drop an image !

THnaks for your work but it seems to be a bit wasted for me :-/

Just because you miss a very small function in TinyMCE as distributed (and which is available in JCE, the most versatile editor in Joomlasphere) you show so much disrespect for the thousands of hours of real important developments (support for PHP 7 for instance) and testing developers, JBS and others have committed? One post so far by you and just complaining about a minor little detail in the editor?

If you miss that function join the JBS or the developers and write a patch that addresses this and creates this function? That is constructive. Remember Joomla is from the Community and you are part of that so you can only blame yourself.

Show some respect for the hard work and thousands of hours those hundreds of volunteers are giving to the project and applaud them for all they do so you can have in your agency this free of Licenses software on a silver plate?

Many Thanks to all Community Contributors to Joomla 3.5!

Great job!

One link that could be useful to add in announcement and at least in forum announcement is the FAQ page on the Wiki:

https://docs.joomla.org/Category:Version_3.5.0_FAQ

Then of course, populate it as needed depending on findings.

Took me guess-work from an older releoase to find the URL... ;)

I was a day to late because the announcement had arrived in the spambox on the server. Luckily I do login to the J! administrator regularly ;). And once again: great work. I updated all my sites with zero problems. A big thanks to all developers and testers!

Sorry if my last words seems to be hard but I still think it's dommageable to add a lots of very nice function (add module, add article, drag'n drop) to an editor which don't have one of the more used function (adding a link to a file witha browser). Of Course I know JCE (paid member) but I really prefer if possible to use the out of box editor but still not possible for our clients and al lthe new exciting function ;-)

And you don't know what we do or give for the Joomla community thse last years so don't judge too hard :)

Very nice work! Really liked that you incorporated those buttons in the TineMCE. Small things like that make a huge difference in user experience.

However. I have to ask something about the image button in the editor. When I press it, the image manager popup doesn't seem to be responsive. Am I the only one experiencing this?

Been testing this for some time now and it looks very good.

Congrats to all devs and what not.

I made a little remaster of a very tiny distro that runs with Xampp 7.0.4 and todays Joomla 3.5.
This is made with TahrPup 6.0.5CE_PAE It is a 408mb distro with it all. A thread for it is here

This is good for those that does not have Xampp 7.0.4 on their servers and want to see what this is about. Download link and warnings in the thread.

This distro runs in ram mode live so you can boot someones PC into and then remove the medium it came from. Its a good thing that can even be installed to external SD card in you smartphone and boot it from there using USB cable. Its makes Joomla portable. To make a bootable USB you might want to use Unetbootin

I took the liberty to post this here as today is today and not all can really check out the speed of PHP7, as its fairly many who has sites at hosting companies and installing Xampp 7.04 might mess with whatever else they already got installed onto their PC for work/testing/fun.

I hope this can be a useful payback gift to this community and at least some of its users.

It'll be fixed in 3.5.1. The SEF plugin in 3.4.8 and earlier used to "fix" that but in some optimizations that stopped. The regex was adjusted and will account for conditions where an href attribute results in a totally empty string again.

FWIW, templates using $this->baseurl or JUri::base(true) without explicitly adding a trailing slash have always been wrong about that as the baseurl attribute is seeded with the result of JUri::base(true) and that API endpoint has never returned a path with a trailing slash (and this includes the joomla.org template). It just so happened that another totally disconnected (and borderline optional) part of the system masked this wrong API usage.

Joomla! 3.5 upgrade leads to Server Error 500

Post by JEndahl » Thu Mar 31, 2016 2:20 am

Hello,

I did an in-place upgrade of my Joomla! 3.4.8 site, using the Administrator Control Panel upgrade process. The site is pretty standard. I use a Joomlart template with a few add-ons, all of which are up-to-date. The upgrade seemed to install properly (no error messages), and I was still able to use the control panel, but if I tried to preview my site, I received an HTML Error 500. Fortunately, I had made a backup of the 3.4.8 site.

I browsed the error_log file, and there is a stream of PHP warnings, indicating that pdo_pgsql.so and pdo_mysql.so failed to load because the Module and PHP were compiled with different API numbers. However, those errors were also occurring prior to my upgrade attempt.

I installed my 3.4.8 backup on my local machine running MAMP. I verified that the site worked properly, and ran the same upgrade process. Again, the upgrade seemed successful, but when I tried to view the website, I received the same Error 500.

PHP on my provider is version 5.4.43. PHP on my MAMP setup is 5.6.2.

I've restored my live site from the 3.4.8 backup and it's working again. Any ideas why I might receive this error and how to upgrade successfully?

Thanks for any suggestions or advice.

--> John

I have the same issue as John.

I get it when I want to activate the SMTP email outgoing only mail function.
I did set it up in Joomla 3.5.0 in Global Configuration under Server, and did hit the Send Test Mail button.
Nothing did happen at the website at my provider.
They did some investigation but did not find anything.
Only this because I did also setup an contact form with the Rapid Contact module.
If I then send an email I got a 120 seconds time out and then this error:

Internal Server Error (500)
The server encountered an internal error or misconfiguration and was unable to complete your request. Please contact the server administrator at [email protected] to inform them of the time this error occurred, and the actions you performed just before this error. More information about this error may be available in the server error log.

Then they did comeup with this server error:

End of script output before headers: index.php, referer: http://www.verdick.nl/index.php/nl/contact-nl

My provider has the following versions installed:
Joomla MySQL Apache PHP OS
Live: 3.5.0 5.5 2.4.6-99 5.4.16-36 CentOS Linux release 7.2.1511 (Core)

I did have also a CentOS 7 server and did setup the same configuration and that did work as expected. I get a confirmation that a test email has been send and I got that test email in my inbox.

I now asked the Provider to check the SMTP server if they see the incoming email request.

My own CentOS 7 has these versions installed:
Joomla MySQL Apache PHP OS
Centos7 3.5.0 5.7.11-1 2.4.6-40 5.5.33-1 CentOS Linux release 7.2.1511 (Core)

I hope you can give me some advise on how to solve this or how to trouble shoot this.

I did never test email functions in Joomla before.

Gerrit.

There are a few peculiarities with Joomla sending mails when run on php 7. Hopefully J3.5.1 will fix that ?

Well, my issue got hi-jacked by the concern over SMTP. However, I did find a solution. ARIsoft Image Slider was incompatible. They have a new March 2016 release (with the same version number!). I installed the newer version and the site loads fine now. Just posting this in case others have a similar issue.

My site just showed a white screen after updating to 3.5 I was testing the effects of the update on the development site in the WAMP environment on a separate computer so there was no serious problem. The live site was unaffected.

I then just systematically worked through disabling modules, plugins and components until I found a configuration that worked. I looked for an updated version of the rogue extension, found it, installed it and everything worked.

The live site has now been updated to 3.5 and is working well.

From past experience, it seems to me that it always worth looking at extensions first when a core update fails.

This topic is about Joomla 3.5.0 and Joomla 3.5.1 has been released two weeks ago.
Are you able to reproduce your issue in Joomla 3.5.1?

I cannot replicate this since it works on our sites as expected. See the screen capture from myJoomla Bug Squad test site. Works as a charm. http://screencast.com/t/fzYpfNHyok

Do you use a non-core admin template or modified backend menu extension or something similar? Some js seems to be conflicting on your site?

well whatever you are trying to show (I do not understand the txt-file you are sending) for sue it is not a Joomla issue since Joomla works like a charm as given and shown. So something on your installation is doing this but based on your feed-back it is impossible to digest or advise what is causing your issues
