My thanks to the development team and all developers for the incredible work you all do (most of it completely beyond me!) and the support the Joomla community provides. Happy New Year....what a great start with that announcement!

Joomla Versions / Updates Since The Split -    6
Mambo Versions / Updates Since The Split -  1

Just goes to show which one is the most progressive.

Great News indeed.  :D

I am hopping though that after this structural change - it will become the foundation for new releases. Because in the commercial world all subsiquent releases are based on the primary code. Structure changes only happen with a new version release. This will help us a lot on the webmaster and maintaince side.

I must say that my experience is new and a wonderful one. You guys have done an amazing job - specially just within a matter of few months. Joomla is something that is really an encourgement for every OSM supporter and shows the power the people have in shapping their destinies.

The way I see it - Joomla is no longer just a CMS - it is an OSM Movement.

Best wishes for happiness and success in the new year from the web developer community.

check out Drupal, they have multisites already. The thing you have to remember is that no one CMS or any software for that matter can be everything to fit everyone's different wants and needs.

the core has been long overdue for a code structure overhaul and that is a huge fundamental undertaking. It will allow 3rd party developers to hopefully eaiser hook into the core so possibly someone will make a multisites mambot or something. There are much bigger things that a lot of people have been waiting a very long time for such as better user management and language management.

@joomlasolutions_JB
Why check Drupal only? There are several CMS featuring Multisite.

I checked several CMS and I liked Joomla most. Most of us here have several Joomla sites. And if you search forum you will find many requests for this feature.

Anyway, my excitement will come when I will see Multisite, Multiple User Level etc.
Any addons will excite me in the same way.

The refactoring was done with multisite in mind. It will not be part of the default release (time doesn't permit this), however Joomla has always been built with extendibility in mind. As a matter of fact the whole goal of this refactoring is to provide more power and flexibility to 3P developers. We happily support any 3P developer that want's to investigate a mutlisite plugin.

Thanks for the complete explanation. I think that we all agree that these steps are important to seperate us from the old project and move towards a stronger application framework. May the Joomla community at-large continues in this new year to evangelise Joomla in our circles as that - a simple interface with a powerful framework beneath on which to develop custom applications. Cheers to the core team.

1.1 seems very promising indeed!

I am currently not coding any 3PD stuff, but I would like to follow these IRC discussions/sessions - is that possible? Probably do not even need to be able to speak, just read. But what channel/network? And btw, is there an (un)official Joomla irc channel?
Did you know there's a Joomla irc channel? Chat to Joomla people live 24/7 - Join #joomla on the Freenode network ( irc.freenode.net )

Sounds Great and I Look forward to seting it up to check it out but....

I just spent good time writing a universal third party plugin and it actually works. I'm running Joomla! with Phorum now...
Will ponder the future usefullness more once I review the new version.

The incoming new release will be alpha-2 or belta? As I know alpha-1 is recommended for running a site, how about this new release?

The next release of 1.1 will be alpha2.  Neither alpha1, alpha2, or even beta are recommended on live sites.
