You can do it, but you need to work on your groups so that everyone else does not inherit from public. Then you make a level that only shows to public.

For what it's worth,

1.6 looks promising, however, implementing an upgrade technology for users to go from 1.5.17+ to 1.6 should be extremely important. I tried a couple of Rocket themes on 1.6, and, no way!

I'm sure there's a bundle of reasons why the new system is the way it is, but is anyone working on anything to help us 1.5.17+ guys to be able to upgrade to 1.6?

Walt.

1) I know j1.5 has issuse with adding custom fields in registration form, has this been fixed in j1.6?

2) Will j1.5 theme, mods,... work on j1.6

3) How extensive is user permission in 1.6. For example, I would like to give a user to approve registrations on joomla and nothing else, can this be done?

Thank you!

User permissions are really detailed and yes you can make it so members of a certain group have only change state on users and nothing else.

Custom fields on registration can be handled through a user plugin; there is an example of one in the install and you can easily make your own.

Existing extensions ... will completely depend on how well they follow 1.5 specs. Things that are really Joomla! 1.5 will require some modification to incorporate ACL and a few other things, but it will not be bad. Extensions that are still mainly coded 1.0 style will be harder to move.

Hello,

In User Manager: Edit Group there is a blank section: Actions Permitted. What will be here?

I think that was an idea that started and we did something different.

Hello everyone,
One simple question : is it possible to install 1.6 alpha 2, update the install regularly with SVN or nightlies AND keep all data (categories, articles, users, etc.) at the same time ?
I have started to enter data in my database but lost everything after updating the install...
This is not for a live project, just a hobby... :)
Thanks.

Unless something very bizarre happens there should be no further database changes since we are at feature freeze.

In general you can just overwrite your files without reinstalling, but if the database is changed you need to reinstall.

Need some honest and open answers.
Yes, I know Alpha/Beta.
What kind of issues are people having with 1.6? is there anything seriou?
I am starting a site and it will take a little while before it is "official" and since i prefer to be bleeding from being at the bleeding edge of software than to be bleeding from being dragged along at the back.
I am wondering if i should start developing on 1.6 and put up with some headaches of alpha/beta
rather than the headaches of migrating to 1.6 later..

I am aware there may be glitches but is there anything serious going on.

thanks in advance.

This is 100% personal, but when I build sites right now I use 1.5 and I will only use extensions that can make the transition to 1.6. That is, I'm not going to install anything that is either legacy or running 1.5 by jerry rigging a legacy layer without the legacy plugin.

If you are developing extensions now is a good time to start working on 1.6 in the sense of adding ACL and making the installation changes. However, I think we're not there yet on documenting what needs to be done. Andrew has a project going on the differences.

Thanks. I must be doing something wrong : I delete all files and directories of the last install, then ftp to my server the nightly tar.gz file, and unzip the file directly on the server.
I have to go through the install process (with the exact same settings, i.e. database info).
In the end, I loose all my previous data (users, groups, categories, etc.) : shouldn't they all be safe within the database ?
Obviously I'm no developer, just a hobbyist..
Thanks again.

I was responding to netorious, sorry if that was confusing.

Yes if you reinstall from scratch you make an new set of database tables so indee you lose your old data.

You're missing a crucial step when overwriting your site (or deleting and unzipping a new copy)

The new copy contains an "installation" directory. If you were to keep your previous configuration.php file and delete the installation directory, you would keep your data.

Hello, I am new of the forum but not joomla. I installed joomla 1.6 and I'm trying, but I would test and develop my test site in HTML5. Where to download Beez template or other validated in HTML5? I saw test5.run-digital.com and is great as a test, but can't download.

Hello,

How about individual rights in ACL? We use Flexiaccess and before that, we use JACL, both have option to set individual rights for user.

Also, i'm looking for view (view intro text/title) /read (read full article) option, will be available in joomla 1.6?

And no multi-mapping option for items... :'(

Different startpages (unique content) for languages?

Today i use Joomfish on an old 1.0 site and if i add news to my main language it will also turn up on the start pages for my other 2 languages, except that it's not translated of course.
In 1.6 would it be possible to have 3 languages with separate independent start pages?

Also.. would it be possible to have a site split into 2 different areas and that they have their own start pages and color theme so they would feel like 2 separate sites?

I'd like to use each start page for news, but independently from each other... did this make any sense?

My understanding is that separate home pages for different languages will be supported natively but I don't know how Joomfish will hook into Joomla 1.6's built-in language switcher.

Note to all, this thread will be locked very soon (should be able to guess why by now). Giving you all fair warning.

Menu Items Auto Expire?

Has there been any talk of adding Publish and Expire dates to Menu Items, much like the Article system?

It would be very useful if you could automate publish and unpublish functionality of the menu items.

It doesn't do much good to automatically unpublish an article if the menu link still points to it. That feature currently is only useful for a blog-type site.

Anyone agree that this would be useful?

Not added to the menu system directly, but has been added to the modules so you can control a menu module via publishing dates.
