The list of open 1 and 2 items in the issue tracker is getting shorter!

Is anyone else getting excited?

I'm hoping we might see an RC before Christmas!

I don't know if this has been asked before but I am yust giving it a go, so correct me when I am wrong :)

The thing I would like to do is to give registered user the possibilitie to add articles. This is easy and works like a charm. But what I also would like to do is to give them the rights to only edit/change or delete their own posted items and not someone elses posted items.

Is this possible with 1.6? And how would I configure this?

EditOwn will definitely be in the final release, but it's not in there completely right now.

My bet is between 7 or 10 betas before we see a release of any RC. So in January/February/March next year, I think we will be able to start creating sites on 1.6.

Good thing is that the development is based upon qualety In terms of eliminating bugs, but the number of betas is a first ever in the industry i think. Right now It feels like the betas will never end...but thats me :)

If I had time, I would contribute.

So, since we are already at Beta 11, are you going to revise your forecast?

I think he meant ANOTHER "7 or 10 betas before we see a release of any RC."
But even then, you'd have to have all the extensions you need ported to 1.6. Otherwise it's like an OS without the apps you need.

On the other front, Drupal 7 sounds interesting...

ehhh...typo dude...here is what i ment:

My bet is between 7 or 10 MORE betas before we see a release of any RC. So in January/February/March next year, I think we will be able to start creating sites on 1.6.

but my hope is also, of course, that I am terribly wrong in my forecast ;)

Not officially. this will start when RC1 is released. It will be possible, you have to know what you are doing in this case though.

Spending a few minutes reading the Mootools blog, I'm surprised to see that MT1.3 has been released, although MT-more-1.3 is still in RC.

http://mootools.net/blog/2010/10/11/moo ... ore-1-3rc/

I know that it was the plan to release 1.6 with MT 1.3. When more-1.3 is finalized, will it be included in the Beta releases?

I've been very happy to shed 1.1 and have 1.2 available in the beta releases, I would be even more happy to get my grubby paws on 1.3 with the new Slick selector engine.

Joomla 1.6 Beta's

Post by seriously » Wed Oct 27, 2010 6:26 pm

Hi Guys,

First off, thanks for creating Joomla, and thanks for all of your outstanding work.

How many Beta's are there going to be?
You are at 12 so far, will there be 134 Beta's or can we expect a working 1.6 any time soon?

I have held off on development of my site for a year now because 1.6 will make what I'm doing on my 1.5 site irrelevant. Will I be waiting another year? Can you give me your best guestimate please?

Thanks

As has been pointed out numerous times throughout this topic and in this blog http://community.joomla.org/blogs/leade ... gears.html
Those time based beta releases will continue until we have eliminated all priority 1-3 issues from the tracker and the system is polished enough for a general availability release.

upgrading from 1.5 to 1.6 guides?

Post by mtxrooster » Thu Oct 28, 2010 7:36 pm

I know I know, it's not out yet, just in beta.. Still, wondering if any conversion/upgrade/update guides are out, or in the works.. Surely part of the 1.6 process will include some form of migration, I tried overwriting my 1.5 install with the 1.6, and ran the installer, and ended up with the common "frontend works, but admin cannot log into the admin backend, blank screen" issue, not to mention it didn't convert any of my existing users, just used the same database to create all new areas (seemingly).

Wondering if there is a process to update/upgrade from 1.5 to 1.6 yet, or if that's just one of the last things that gets worked on prior to the beta becoming an official release.?

Ahh, good to know :) Not griping one bit (seriously, I'm not) I just would have thought it would be in the works before hitting RC status, as RC status generally in software is "well, it's ready, let's release it and see how many issues crop up" before it goes final. No worries, though, like I said, not griping, I just noticed there didn't seem to be any such implimentation, and based on my knowledge of software processes, thought I had just missed the guide/instructions/key file to migrate/update. For the record, I couldn't be more thrilled that a ACL is implimented. I never understood why a new CMS (compared to all the others out there) left this feature out, when it is a core essential used in pretty much every CMS. Glad it's finally coming on board and can't wait to get some testing done on it :)

In regard to the guy above where my post was moved to - Dude.. You realize there could be a limitless amount of Betas before it goes RC or final, right? 12 is NOT a high number AT ALL, rofl :) Some programs, much less packages such as this see 12 'releases' an hour. The feature lock, however is a good indicator that RC might be coming in the near future, as nothing fundamentally new from that point on will be included in 1.6. If you're in a rush, run with 1.5, otherwise as programmers like to say, "It'll be ready when it's ready".

Is there going to be a big difference between using joomla 1.6 and joomla 1.5 with a user permissions extension?

No disrespect to the developers, but... no-one knows when Joomla 1.6 will be launched. I suggest you install yourself a 1.5 website and start to experiment with that, so at least you'll know the basics when 1.6 is available.

LisbethB,

If you're comfortable playing with a beta version for a few months while the final version works its way to the surface, then 1.6 would be the way to go. The 1.5 version will have a year of support once 1.6 is released, so you'll be looking at an upgrade within around a year if you go with 1.5 now.

The question I have is, do you need the site operational on Joomla immediately, or can it wait a few months?

The upside to waiting, you can learn 1.6 while it's being finalised.
The upside to going with 1.5, you have 3.26 tons of extensions to choose from.

The downside of 1.6 - you can't deploy immediately, and you'll be updating it every few weeks until the final version is released.

The downside to 1.5 - you'll lose support 1 year after 1.6 is released and you'll need to upgrade to 1.6 (along with all of your 3.26 tons of extensions)

Thanks a lot for your answers. I haven't thought of using the beta version... but it sounds like a possibility.

I have a lot of pages to convert, so I don't plan on having the new website up and running soon.

I don't plan on building my own template, so are there any templates available for 1.6?

There are a few templates built into 1.6, and a few that I've heard mentioned in the forums. If you decide to put up with 1.6 built-in templates, you'll probably be able to find a fair number of templates by the time 1.6 is final.
