Thanks for the good news. Hopefully those of us running 1.0.8 will be able to upgrade smoothly to the new build. It sounds great!

Great job!  Looking forward to using 1.5...

I think you've been coding too much though - you are starting to refer to yourself in the third person :)  jk...

You truly are making good things happen Johan.

I'll be at the Linux World this week in Boston. I'm not sure what day I'm going yet, but I'm a tad skeptical of this 1.5, but I do realize that this is the future. What I'm skeptical about is the idea that joomla will become some nearly for pay product, but again I'm just guessing here.

sounds good to me.
I hope I don't sound negative when I say that it still has a long way to go as far as a Tablelesss design and accessibility is concerned. One of the reasons why i dropped the use of joomla when designing websites. I'll wait till joomla allows me to design Tableless websites out of the box. Someone mentioned that they would release a official Tableless version of joomla along with the release of 1.1. But since the Accessibility and Design forum has been closed there has been no further notification on this subject.

we are completely separating logic and presentation in 1.5.... you will be able to override presentation.  Granted it won't be via patTemplate, but it will be possible.

Until you see an article claiming that it was to be bought out, similiar to what was posted on openoffice.org today about Microsoft buying them out ( see a screenshot ) I wouldn't be too concerned.  You will note that the original link has already been removed from the openoffice.org web site but I did see it there earlier today

Well, can't wait for the discussion of 1.5 on Monday in Boston.  My first Mambo/Joomla site went up a couple days more than a year ago, and I've had an excellent time of it, witnessing and taking part in the innovation as it zooms forward.

Regardless of the numerical niceties , I'm excited about the substantive core changes that make the core more navigable, more extensible, and universally adoptable (linguistically anyway), while keeping the task of putting a web site together simple.

Heh...Slashdot outdid themselves with the teenie bopper barbie motif today.

Excellent, finally an official announcement, and even the roadmap (http://dev.joomla.org/content/view/23/61/) is updated accordingly.
We've all known for some time now next version will be good, now we can tell others it's gonna be so good it grew a few .releases in one go. Relief.
+ an ETA for Beta, gives everyone something to look forward to.

[Jinx, in the forum announcement, you have an "Image" which is not replaced.]
Bravo.

I didnot wait, I used the 508hack from Run-Digital, works good enough.

Firts of all, thanks for the offical announcement. I was a bit confused, like the most user, about 1.1 or 1.5 but I would still say you shouldn't give any informationen before you update the roadmap, write an offical news etc.. There was too much confusing in the  community and it will take a long time before everybody knows J! 1.1 isn't anymore. The next point is the date. You sholdn't post a major chang on the first of april. Some user think it is an April joke.

Greetings Bluerock

Honestly, 1.2 1.5, 2.9 who cares? In my mind this is more a question of semantics than anything else. In theory development and revision numbers are important (to techies anyway) but I can point you to many, many successful commercial projects that have tweaked product version numbers for reasons other than purely technical ones. Do people stop using them because a version number is missed? No because the only thing that users want is a product that works.

So, Everyone needs to take a deep breath, step back and really examine where Joomla! as a community, a product and a way of life [ OK the last one was a stretch...  :)  ] is at this point in time.

From the early heady days when OSM (before Joomla! had a name) took its first steps to where we are now I think every one has to really pat themselves on the backs. From the devs, the doc team members and the collective community as a whole. We have come a long way in only a few short months.

Yet we still have a ways to go. While UTF-8 support is important, equally as important is :

  • True ACL support
  • Full separation of presentation from logic
  • Database abstraction/Multi database support
  • Version Control
  • Useability and Accessibility

So while we need a certain level of constructive criticism from the community we also need people to realize that a decision has been made, accept the decision and move on. Pleasing everyone, everytime is simply not an option.

However I feel confident in the decisions that have been made so far and in our collective abilities to keep this "baby" moving forward.

Viva La Joomla! See you all in Boston.

Greetings All,
Was reading over the road map and previous posts/threads about the 1.1 --> 1.5 release. Have seen many questions about fully customizable page titles but see no mention of it in the road map or release notes.

Just offering a thought here.... the whole reality of a website is having folks find it. All the bells and whistles of Joomla are awesome but if no one can find your site than why make the effort?? I have some relatively deep experience with SEO and one thing is clearly true. The page titles carry more weight than just about any other single element. So assuming this is a proven and aggreeable point my hope is to see some focus placed on this one element being added. If you combine fully customized page titles with a well written and validated template that is optimized for SEO you can use Joomla to land your site in front of the folks who are looking for it.

If you check out my other posts you will see a site we developed called http://www.bahai.us

This site, template, content, etc.. is optimized for the terms "bahai faith" - "bahai" - "bahai temple" - "baha'i faith" - "baha'i"

If you try Google or Yahoo on these terms you will find us in the top three results. With more customized page titles we coudl take the top spots for sure.

Well enough said... maybe this is already in the upcoming release and just not mentioned?? God bless the Joomla developers for all thier hard work and I hope the thoughts help the process along.

Peace
Jeffrey

ACL: comes in 1.6
Separation of logic and presentation: Allready in 1.5, although not through pT
Multi database support: Implemented in 1.5 (at least in a basic level, the queries have not been optimized for other DBs)
Version Control: Will come... someday... dunno
U&A: With the separation of presentation and logic, this should be no problem. Its all a question of the template

Not to cause massive extra work for the development team but is there any chance that a built-in multisites feature may be integrated into the core (perhaps in 1.5, that would definitely help justify the multiple sub-versions being skipped!)? 8)  Or is this not on the agenda yet?

It will be integrated into the core at some point in the future, but not 1.5  Also, we feel extremely justified in our versioning decision :)

Cool! 1.5 sounds sounds like a winner... By the way... off the subject here...  there are no girls here? Sigh, being a techie geek sucks sometimes...
