Mambo Open Source Development Team - Letter to the community - Discussion

Just reading through the foundations new website (i Bet they rushed to get that up ) and I notice there is no price or cost information ANYWHERE on their site for an ordinary member, which seems very strange.

Also I find the fact that if you want to be a 3pd member, then it would cost you $1000!! So if you develop free and open source components, mods and bots, and you want to be recognised for doing that, you have to pay for the priveledge, isnt that arse backwards?

I also found it shocking that any member of the Dev team HAS to be a member of the foundation, so if you want to contribute code, time and energy, you have to pay for the priveledge. No wonder the devs are leaving.

When I went bed last night I was still hopeful that maybe something would be sorted between the devs and Miro so this project could continue as one under the name mambo, but alas this morning I fear this is not possible.

What a shame this is, another example of greedy people wanting to ruin something that is good and pure.

I felt kind of sick while reading all that crap about "freedom" of software and work of community on their Foundation site. Isn't it kind of hypocritical to speak of "freedom" while charging loads of money so that a dev may work on "free" software. They've take the fame and now it's time to take all the cash possible.

Guess I'm a bit late to the party - I only found out today what has been going on. 

At first when I saw the foundation announcement I thought "oh, a foundation. ok."  Only when I saw the dev team's letter did I investigate further. 

A foundation which is hand-picked by Miro CEO, requires you to become a member by paying a fee if you are to have a say, which bans core developers from its forum because they happen to disagree, and which generally fails to offer any justification for its actions.  Sounds more like a dictatorship than a foundation. 

At first I reserved judgement, but having read a number of the discussion posts I'm firmly behind the dev team and will be directing people here from my website.  I think this is all very sad, especially the loss of the name mambo, as it is such a strong brand, but so be it.

Yes, loosing the name is rather sad but freedom seems quite expensive these days.

This is some bad news, for the whole development process. But it is good news that this stays open-source an will be free, and will continue to be managed troug the community!

A new name? OSM maybe? Or just a whole new name with no links to Miro, Mambo or anyhting like that. In that way, mutiny cms is also not a good name...

I hope to hear soon what will be going on with this and when new releases will come out.

Not really... the Core devs are all here and still working hard on the next release. The rest of the teams are just as committed so whilst things may take a few days to calm down, everything should soon get back to normal.

Yes I agree that all is very sad, and Mambo is very strong brand with many awards...
But what is the main power of this project ... all of us, dev team, docs team, translators and more our strenght is our community, why mambo win so many awards because many people from whole world, test, work with it, translate it etc. As I think in next edition of Best Open Source Solution will be for our new CMS .

It sad that Miro does something like this. Community made Mambo to avard winning software and now Miro just want to make some money. That's sad.

The power of simplicity of a open source project... Mambo was that and it continue being the same. If the Miro´s team want to take advantage of the work of all of us (developers, designers, community founders, translators, etc,) they are going to find a problem. They are going to loose the heart and the soul of the mambo project's. The growing community will stop and will born a new community with another name where Miro won't be nothing.

MamboHispano and me like his webmaster are with the developers and we support the new project. I want to collaborate with you.

Still gonna wait to see how this plays out before making any final decisions, but right now, I think the mosCE project will follow the core dev. Whatever is best for Open Source, and all it stands for.

Thanks, Ryan. Its important that developers of 3rd party addons be aware of the situation and prepare to take a stand...or get out their pocketbooks and play fair. Cheers to you - mosCE is a fabulous mambot.

For me, this issue is going to be decided on a matter of principle, not on the popularity or ratings of the software produced.

Make a stand against capitalist exploitation, keep the Open Source flag flying, and I'll be with you.

In the end it may a good path. The connection to Miro was always something distracting.
I hope the financial aspect will not the one preventing the success (as I believe this is the only thing Miro added). Somehow I could even imagine that Miro gives up sooner or later... the community is one of the key factors of Mambo (beside the ddevelopers of course)... so what will they do without them behind all? Not to mention that they now have a proven bad reputation.

Btw. if the new thing really going to happen... I would be glad if it were possible to detect which version an addon is running on... I would mine prevent it from doing their work with Mambo 4.5.3+ instead of Mutinity 4.5.3+ (or whatever the name would be).

I don't believe it's in the written rules, but try it, and find yourself banned   No worries though, no great loss to you to not have access *there* anymore...  plus you'd join a neat club of banned people, including me
