Template Contest Entry [SpaceGlow] - UPDATED

Post by BernardE » Thu Sep 20, 2007 4:05 pm

SpaceGlow

Template contest entry

UPDATE: base url's inserted to enable SEF url's

Demo Site: http://www.webflash.co.za/demo/spaceglow

Download Here: http://www.webflash.co.za/demo/spaceglow/spaceglow.zip

Image

Overview: With SpaceGlow I attempted to create a simple, clean template that has all the technical features required of a good Joomla 1.5 template. I don't know if I have achieved this, but here goes.

The layout is a simple 3 column layout with collapsible user module positions.

Color styles - there are 4 text color styles built in
Joomla Logo - you have the option of using a modern or traditional Joomla Logo
Flexible template width - the width of the template can be adjusted to different values
Dynamic text resizing - text resizing for accessibility
Custom module chrome - shadow module chrome to achieve shadow effect on module headings
Template overriding - template overriding on various modules and content component
Display options - Option to show pathway and component

Some parameters can be set in the backend

Any comments welcome...

I can assure you that in IE7 the template is very clear, simple and fast (I don't know by 56K)

Looks cool, however in IE7, on a wide monitor, the search box is out in the middle of no mans land...  you need to specify where to put it os its fixed in place

Nice, but the menu seems a tad buggy. It's hard to read the text, but if you hover over the very left of a button you can see half the hover image loaded, but not the other side. Like image:

Also, as mentioned above the search bar needs to be put down in stone, it's moving about too much (like image below)

Thanks for the feedback.

I have changed the search the it isn't positioned absolute anymore - should work now.

About the hover over the menu. This is the only way I could get the hover effect to work with a stretchable figure. It consists of an and part. The has the left the left part of the image and the the right part. When you hover over the the whole image changes, because is included in the tag. However, only hovering over the tag doesn't affect the tag.

Do you know of a better way of doing this?

Cheers

I'm not sure this is possible without external code, I had the same problem and decided to go for simple text color hover states instead...

True, hovers don't work with IE. I had to make use of an csshover.htc file to get it working.

Why not show polls questions?

From what is see it looks like your polls don't have titles. The module publishes your title as the question. Just check in you polls component if all your polls have titles.

Polls have titles. The questions was on default template but wasn't on SpaceGlow. (Sorry for my English)

I tried to replicate the error by creating another poll, copying the module and setting that module to the second poll. The questions are displayed. I cannot think what can be the problem. The only other option I can suggent is to delete the tepmplate override file for the poll module (in html folder of the template)

Wow the "mirroring" on the footer is awesome :)
Why not build this "in" ???
I really like the "borders" and you can feel this space shuttle feeling from it.

"But" as exelent the part of the "menu/navigation " might be with the "hole in the design ... it takes "substance" away and damage the overall experience :O)
I would prefer a dark part ok but not like a hall in the site structuure...

Cheers

Thanks for the feedback.

I would love to make the mirror effect part of the site, but there is no real good way of doing this, appart from just including a small mirror effect at the bottom of the template. I can't have the content mirrored - this is what I would really like.

The "hole in the design" was the inspiration for this template, so it is kind of central to the whole thing...

Would you prefer the channel to go straight through?

Hi,
yes i thought about this, or as an alternative left and right a closing of the white box.
I even came up with the idea of haveing a LCD display like optic as the black menu navigation part, well :)

Sorry if i critical with this but that it actualy buggying me with the design but to be honest to really make apoint i have to install the design and look mor einto it, which i cannot do now ...

Well still if i would choose a design yours would be first or second :)

Cheers

Btw of course you can make the footer with a mirror, we need a 2nd table with 100% width below the site with 3 images ... left border, right and dthe middle stretching part :) (if its a 100% with joomla style) And without the text of course... maybe not so heigh ...

I will try this out :)

Cheers

I created the template screenshot in Photoshop. I made use of a duplicate image that I stretched to create perspective and then a layer mask to create the fade effect.

I believe the mirroring was added to the image and is not part of the template

Great template!!!  Only problem is that if you turn on Joomla  Search Engine Friendly URLs you lost the template completely and just get the text.  Do you have a fix for this?  Amy suggested some code that keeps the template in place but loses the logo and moves things badly out of position - see image in thread here:

http://forum.joomla.org/index.php/topic ... 9.html#new

Thanks!

I fixed the relative urls to base urls, and it seems o be working fine now. I've loaded the updated template for download. I think the problem of the logo and images moving with SEF url's are also sorted out, let me know if you still have a problem with this.

About the mirroring - yes it was only part of the image. I wanted to include this in the template, but without the content also mirroring, it didn't have the look I wanted.

Nice. But the asymetric design should shrink to fit a reduced window size otherwise I find it looks strange.
Thanks for your time.

Bernard,

Many thanks for your updated version which has completely fixed my problems with the top menu and logo moving.

However, I'm now getting something rather odd - see below:

Image

It says this is a link to: "http://www.xyz.com/templates/beez/images/trans.gif" but I have uninstalled the Beez template.  This missing image doesn't show up if I change to Milky Way, and I don't remember seeing it in the old version of your template.

Any idea where the code is that I need to delete to get rid of this?

Thanks again!

Frances
